If in fact the CCTV was on (you hope), then you should have nothing to worry about. If it wasn't, you're likely fucked, wrongly or rightly. I don't know you, but simply as a fellow foreigner, I hope no one is doing you a wrong. However, if you did do wrong, in whatever slight or grevious way, I hope they hang you high and long.

I'm inclined to believe the word of a fellow teacher over that of a paranoid mom who goes to bed cursing President Lee for condemning the entire Korean nation to an early death thanks to Mad Cow disease.

Doesn't Korea have the death-penalty for pedophiles?

I would crush this right away. First, get those videos if they exist. Second, (once you have them) write a letter to the parent clearly and simply stating that you did not make physical contact with her daughter on any occasion (hope for your sake you have never even brushed against her). Also make it clear you do not appreciate the girl's false accusations and that you will be doing everything in your power to to make sure this girl is punished in any way possible for making false accusations. I would just be very straight forward and unemotional about it. Don't roll over and take this crap or the Korean system will think you are easy pickings.

I was showing my adult students pictures of my family and I included one of my dad driving his tractor with his shirt off (He lives way out in the country in east Alabama.). A few weeks later, one of the ajummas referred to "the naked picture of your father." Either they're mistranslating the word or it's considered 'naked' to go without a shirt. Maybe someone who speaks more Korean than me can shed some light on it. Either way, I'd follow all the advice here about covering your butt. It might come to naught or it might really hit the fan...there's no real way of knowing until it goes down. Proceed with caution.

In Korea under the constitution a person has the right to a reputation. I'm not sure if that is a person has the right or a citizen. If a citizen has that right you can sue her for damages. i'm not sure you can sue a 12 year old though.

DO NOT DO THIS

The last thing you need is them showing a letter you wrote that could be perceived as being threatening.

Get the tapes and go to a lawyer.

Actually, you might be on to something right here.

I don't think there's really a direct word for naked. I think the most common phrase is something like 옷벗은 사람. That means "someone without clothes on" or it could mean "something without a shirt."

Whatever you say will be translated and filtered by your korean management anyway. I've been through this before with a mother accusing me of hitting her child.

Mother to wonjangnim: " This teacher hit my child in class for no reason. I won't send my child back until he at least apologises, and if he doesn't I will sue him".

Me: Your darling boy was showing off and climbing out the window of a 5th floor classroom. I ran over, restrained him and pulled him away from the window ledge. Your angel has been a nightmare disruption in that class since day one. he bullies other students and 3 have already left because of his behaviour. I SAVED HIS LIFE.

Wonjangnim translates to mother:
"Please excuse him, he is a new teacher. He offers his full apologies to you and your son, and begs your forgiveness. Do keep sending your boy here, he is an excellent student."

Exactly. That is why you have a Korean friend translate the letter and give it the parent in the meeting yourself. Hawgwan owners are part of the system I am talking about here and they will toss you under the bus as quickly as possible to save their own ass. The only way you win in this situation is to make it clear to everyone you are not taking any crap. Unlike what the above poster thinks...threats followed up by action are the only way you get results in Korea. This guy isn't just facing getting fired he is facing possible criminal charges. Taking it like a lamb isn't going to save his bum.

The reason these boards are full of stories of instructors getting screwed over and over is because they take it. Just read the posts here. The ones who get screwed end up staying with the place that screwed them 90% of the time. I have worked for three different hawgwan owners in the nearly five years I have been in Korea. All were crooks. At the first sign of a problem, I sat each down privately and told them very matter a factly that I don't work for crooks...that is just the way it is. I made it crystal clear that if I had any problems with them trying to rip me off I would get on a plane and leave without giving it a second thought. There are thousands of available jobs in the ESL industry and I could have another one just like the one I have now in a week (if that). I have yet to be screwed in Korea.

And for those who piss all their money away every month and don't have enough to buy a plane ticket out of here when they should I don't have any sympathy for you.

O.P.,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. In regards to the story of the 12 year old, there are some things missing on her part. She did not mention when or where this took place. Perhaps you can use the missing details to your advantage...I don't know.

I agree with the other posters here.........get a lawyer...and get one that speaks English. You can go to your embassy and they can provide you legal assistance (a list of English speaking lawyers) but that is it.

Getting access to those tapes is a major priority. However, you don't have to flaunt them in front of the mother and student as of yet. Watch the tapes with your co-teacher and principle (director) first and see what they have to say. If they see the evidence, they will more then likely provide the mother and the student a moment of pause in their actions against you.

Considering the fact that Koreans are Koreans..........if you DO go to a a lawyer (assuming this is issue is pushed further) and he/she takes the case, the tapes will be necessary. However, your boss may in fact manipulate them in some way where they are not viewable or don't exist.......................all in the name of saving face, because this happening at his/her school. The last thing they want is a foreign teacher falsely accused by their precious Korean student and parent. It would surely make the boss look bad.

The other students in the class have a good chance of being put in the middle of all this. They may be asked (or told) what they saw. Depending on the social status of the accuser some will go along with it......others may not. Be prepared for a bag of lies amongst the students. Hopefully it won't happen, though.

First things first, though. Get a lawyer. Inform your co-teacher and director of that. But make sure you tell them it is not to pursue legal action agains tthe school. If you say that, then they will not be so helpful. Infrom them that it is action you are taking in regards to a serious false accusation against the student and the mother....not the school.

If things do work out for you, then also be prepared that the mom and the girl will probably NOT get into trouble, legaly. The worst that will happen is that the student will not attend the school and the mother will simply shut up and drop it. Don't expect to win a law suit or someone to give a letter of apology (although, it is possible). With that being said, if your school does not hand over the tapes, then you can go to the labor board and take the situation their.

I think this is a case where you should fight fire with fire. A previous poster was right.........too many teachers bend over and take these things up the arss (whether it involves a student or a corrupt director).

If all else fails.........which it could..............be prepared to leave. Yes, I know, suddenly leaving makes it look like you are guilty. But, considering you are in Korea the odds are not in your favor.

Make sure you record every conversation with anyone you have about this matter.

Get a lawyer...........get those tapes.

Best of luck.

Horrorshow! WTF!
Show your boss the video you showed the kids. Show them other pictures of naked man-boob and explain that it isn't considered naked in western countries.
As for the breast touching thing...that is a complete fiction, right? If it isn't, you deserve to be in the bad spot you're in. If it is...you're still in a bad spot. I dunno...if that happened to me, I might just bolt.

pretty sure i read somewhere ( no doubt on this board ) that there's no legal repercussions for making false accusations against someone ( especially a filthy waeguk who's only here to fornicate with korean women anyway ).

its a shitty situation,

That's not necessarily true, depending on your circumstances. You can file a complaint with the city court to demand damage money for recklessly slandering your reputation as an upstanding teacher. We did and it changed *EVERYTHING*. Reprimands to teachers involved, and personal written apologies as incentives for us to drop the charges. Of course, I'm F2 and my wife helped a lot, and my beef was with the 교육청, not a kid - some differences there. But if your scenario ever happens to me I fully plan on publicly squashing the family whose brat attempts any scheidt like this on me during my next contract. I will drag their sorry a*sses in from their job or have them found guilty in absentia and send the bill to a collection agency if they have them here.

You can do this. A teacher losing face publicly like this is a big deal in Korea. Do it. Push the envelope and make this as formal as possible. Good luck.
