I recall reading a number of articles couple years ago suggesting that Korean women are among the biggest consumers of cosmetics in the world. If anyone has links to such articles, could they please post them here or PM.
Also, articles similar to this one would be also welcome:
The price of beauty in South Korea.
Rumour reached me that this was one of Charles Scanlon's last reports for the BBC and the main reason was not so much the comments about plastic surgery but the apperance of Korean cities.
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated. |

Cosmetics do seem to be one of the things that sell well here in Korea. It would be interesting if someone could find comparisons of how much Koreans spend versus other nations.
My wife is always complaining she needs more cosmetics. As expensive as they are, someone is making a hell of a lot of money off all those women. |

A big part of that is cultural obligation. A friend explained that most Koreans think that if you're lazy about your appearance, you'll be lazy about everything else too. For a woman, wearing a ton of makeup sort of suggests she's a hard worker etc |

I once told a girl that I was seeing for a few months...hey, you should wear less makeup cuz you're still pretty without all that makeup. Great skin, but wore too much eye makeup and sometimes she'd wear this flavored lipgloss and I'd hate kissing her when she had it on. My words were intended as a compliment, but she totally took offense and overreacted saying that I didn't know what I was talking about...
Personally, I prefer girls who don't wear much makeup at all or at least look like they don't have any on. I've seen lotsa hot Korean girls who hardly wear any makeup, but I've also seen some who pile that shit on! |

For some of us women, painting our faces with different colors makes us happy and content. We could care less if it attracts men or not. It's a way of expressing ourselves. For example whenever I'm in a bitchy hostile mood and want to be unfriendly to people, I make sure to put on heavy eyeliner and bold blush as to send out a message to everybody "Don't mess with me or I'll tear you apart!" Anyway, that's just me. ^^
In many cases, Korean women and Asian women in general wear makeup because they want to feel accepted by other women and 'fit in' particularly with the fashionable ones. |

^ Ditto.
I personally wear makeup because "it's fun," and the last thing I would really care about is attracting men with makeup. I don't wear make up everyday, maybe 50% of the time. But if you go clubbing, wearing glittery makeup just feels good. I think most women would attest to this, that they wear makeup for themselves.
If those girls are wearing makeup to the point where guys can easily tell, then her friends are not doing her a favor. In any case, girls are pretty critical about looks, as do men sometime, and sometimes it is a self-esteem booster. I think as long as one doesn't feel the need to wear makeup just to step out to a local supermarket, there is no crime in expressing herself through makeup.
I like little makeup, especially the natural look. I know what you mean by the "cakey" look - gosh - someone just needs to pull her over and tell her that she's doing it all wrong.
Op- sorry, I'm not much of a help to you. |
