I'm like to go Vietnam from Pattaya, Thailand on my soon to be, much needed vacation. I apologize beforehand for being so self-centered and seemingly attention drawing but I've read most of this forum and found it to be very useful and informative, indeed...

I'll hang in Pattaya until the novelty wears down then bolt to Vietnam for sunny beaches and high times.

Can anybody advise, please? Never been to Nam and wondering where to beach and lay back...

Any and all suggestions would be so well appreciated...

You know I love you? Yes?

My advice: Don't trust the Vietnamese. They will rip you off every chance they get. I don't mind helping people out in poorer countries, but being lied to at every turn and having countless scam attempts made me vow never to go back.

Vietnam's beaches are trashy. Literally. You'll be swimming in plastic bags, corn cobs and band-aids.
The closest thing I found to a nice beach was in Mui Ne.
Mui Ne is more of a sleepy stretch of road with some really nice resorts and average bungalos.
The beaches there were clean, but the sand was a little coarse.
Mui Ne also has a desert a little to it's northwest. Dunes as far as the eye can see. It was interesting to find, but not so interesting to swat away all the local kids throwing plastic mats in your face shouting "I take you sliding?". I couldn't get them off of my scooter. Four of them at once.

Na Trang has a picturesque beach, but it's full of trash like I mentioned. Good night life there though.

While Thais are in no way honest to tourists, neither are the Vietnamese.
The only difference is, Thais will bilk you while making you think you're getting a deal.
The Vietnamese will bilk you and stick it in your face.

Not to mention hypodermic needles in Nha Trang. I saw about 3-4 of them just lying around the town and the beach.

I can overlook all kinds of trash, but people who just toss hypodermic needles on the beach or around town, that is...well, insane.

But, that is Nha Trang, Vietnam.

I'd agree with that as a generalisaton. Also, the Thais aren't as persistent as the Viets, and can take no for an answer. I find the Thais will be very offended if it's implied their ripping you off. There's usually a standard price for things that most vendors observe, apart from Tuk Tuk drivers.

The Vietnamese, in tourist areas, will HOUND you - and once you get rid of one guy, there's a gauntlet of other peddlars, hookers, pimps, beggers and drug dealers to contend with. Anyone and everyone will try their luck at imposing their own personal foeigner tax.

TRAVEL TIP: When asked in Vietnam, "How long have you been here?" DO NOT mention a time frame under a week. As an experiment I told one guy I'd just arrived that day, and another guy, selling the same thing, I'd been there for a month. The difference? 200%.

You do know it's the wet season in SEA, right?

I'm in Thailand, Phuket right now and the rain's been staying away - but I was in Saigon this time last year and it was bucketing down.

Wow, thanx guys... Smile

I guess Vietnam is not for me, then. Last I went from Thailand to Cambodia, I had a hoot and it was very cheap. I stayed in Sihanoukville at a very inexpensive hotel, indeed. It was really nice, though. I just can't recall the name but it was one of the only hotels around there with a pool. It also had a casino. The pool was visable from the main street afront it. The hotel was across the street from the beach on the opposite side of that main street. Nice big room with all the hotel room amenities for about $20. a night.

Does anybody know the name of this place? And, do you know if it's still that cool to stay there?

I'm thinking retrekking from Pattaya to Sihanoukville on that cross boarder bus trip... any advice on that will be rewarded with great fortune with the opposite sex this summer...

peace Cool

I'd say VN is worth a visit. It's a bit different. Just be careful.

OP: I spent a month in Cambodia and in Vietnam. I found the beaches in Sihnoukville far worse than the beaches in Vietnam. In Cambodia, you will have tons of people approaching you every two sec's to buy something, and the beach is dirty.

There is a really clean and quiet beach about five minutes from Hoi An, Vietnam which is a must-see. Nha Trang is nice, but way touristy if that is what you are looking for, then go there. Mui Ne is supposed to be nice with the sand dunes there. Do go to Vietnam, you won't be disappointed.

Check this link out.. Smile

as a tourist, you will be ripped off anywhere...in SE Asia.

Yes you do get ripped off in Vietnam..but the prices are so cheap anyway!

Vietnam is worth going. They have great scenery.
