I noticed that too the other day. I calculated that even at the temp job I worked at in Vancouver in 2000 (and including the GST cut) I would have paid a total of some $600 less in taxes, which was a HUGE amount of money to me at the time. |

I haven't paid income tax in about 4 years.
mindmetoo, how did you take care of this considering you were in a similar position?
Did you have to show them proof that you were living overseas?
How about prooving that you were paying taxes?
Thanks in advance. |

bump ~ I am in the same situation....I am curious to know what Revenue Canada said to you (for not being a loyal tax payer for over 7-8 years).... |

I didn't file while I was away, and then filed my non residency paperwork when I got back to Canada. Not only did I get approved, I got a massive refund the year after I returned.
You can only be penalized on money that you owe them. IF you weren't earning anything in Canada, and not receiving any handouts from the Canuck government, you'll probably be fine. |

thanks for the info.....myself, I haven't filed since 2003, but I did earn a little bit of money the previous year....would Revenue Canada have records of what I earned?....I assume so....I will be traveling to Canada this summer, and plan on claiming my non-resident status (as I plan on living in Korea for awhile)....I guess, I want to clear up any debts that I may have, so when I eventually move back to the homeland, I am not going to get dinged with a massive tax bill....any suggestions would help a lot |

I lived in Seattle for four years and informed them of my move. Then I moved to Korea for four years. They've never demanded I file, knowing I was living abroad.
Now that I'm working, I've popped back up on Rev Can radar. We'll see what happens when I file next year. |

your avatar is pretty cool so let's forget the triple post....
BTW... no photo essays...there used to be a poster on here who would put up all kinds of insulting photo essays like
"the drunks of Insa dong" and other crap...
that guy left Korea, but since he has no real friends he still comes on this board all the time and tries to make teachers here feel guilty for having crappy jobs.... he even calls us "chumps"
truth is, only he had a crappy job... mine is great... and so are many other jobs over here.... |
