From what I understand, you can't serve alcohol at a game room. Just like you can't serve alcohol at a noraebang or video bang (legally). But...like everywhere I'm sure there's a BYOB loophole (hint hint). Wink

That's true. I have a Korean friend who opened a board game cafe near a university and they are not allowed to serve drinks. I don't know about the BYOB thing.

Not understanding clue etc... alot of the board games we know and love have a cultural basis.

One of the things this girl does is sit down and play the first 1 or 2 games with a customer and teach them the rules. She also spent 2 weeks before opening playing each game multiple times with her staff so that they would know how to play and be able to help the customers out.

A good game to get is:
Cranium

The board cafe in Hwajeong serves liquor. It also doubles up as a video game room.

My question is....to those people in Busan, are there any board cafes there? I was in Busan this weekend, and I wanted to take my friend to one.

Board games are great. Risk is quite interesting with a few beers and Axis and Allies is great (been a looooong time since I played that one) but Divine Right is the king. Unfoturnately, I lost all my pieces for that one.

Our game cafe will be opening for business next Tuesday, the 23. The grand opening party will be on the 26, at about 7pm. We'll have free cake and refreshements for those on hand.

I'll have a map and some other details up on my blog in a few days. I'll post a link when they go up.

Hope to see you guys there.

Yes, that's my baby of the day. And thanks. I like my new avatar a little too much. If she were my babe, I'd be a litle crazy and suicidal so maybe I'm lucky.

there are board games in busan.
In PNU there are 2 in the same building and one across the street. There are a few more in the surrounding area.

Good games: blokkus
Settlers of Catan (i haven't played it here b/c i've forgot the rules my friend taught me 4 yrs ago)
does anyone have a link to a settlers webpage that explains rules
(my friend is so into the game that he's set up an online score table for our friends....man, if those geek tests were by association, i'd be done for.)

goodluck uni. i'm sure it'll fly

With interior work coming to a close, I'm finally able to make a formal announcement regarding the opening of our cafe.

So... Universalis, Korea's first internationally owned and operated board game cafe, will be open for business on Tuesday, the 23rd. We're located near the front gate of Hongik University (map below), and business hours will be from 12pm to 12am. The fee is 1,700W for the first hour, and 1,500W for each additional hour.

We will be having a Grand Opening Party on Friday, the 26th, at about 7pm. We'll be serving free cake and refreshments, and we might have some other prizes or events as well (I suggested auctioning off a date with me to the ladies, but my girlfriend nixed the idea).

We have about 70 games on the menu, plus a selection of beverages (both cold and hot) and snacks (cheesecake, nachos) for sale. And if a snack just isn't enough for you, we're working with Hubble Bubble, a friend's restaurant located nearby, to create a special evening menu with larger meals that are prepared at his place and delivered over.

Everyone is invited! So please come on down, introduce yourself, and enjoy some of our games with your friends. We can provide game explanations in both Korean and English. If there is anything you don't like, or any games you want to play that we don't have, let us now.

You can find the map to our place at my blog:

We hope to see you there!

Good luck for your cafe. I've been watching this thread pretty carefully for developments.. :)

From my blog (http://cathartidae.blog-city.com/read/446315.htm:

Our board game cafe will be hosting our first ever charity night next Monday, the 26th. We'll be giving 10% of all profits made after 7pm, plus whatever donations any customers may want to give, to the Korea Animal Protection Society. My goal is to make this a monthly event, with a different charity each time. So come on down with some friends and have fun while helping a deserving charity.

You can find a map to our place at the link above.

we went to one last saturday just for something different to do. we had a jolly good time. we found one at hongdae, no smoking and no alchohol but that was cool coz no-one wanted to drink. the first hour was 2000won, every hour after that is 1500. they had lots and lots of cool games and a pleasurable couple of hours was passed there. i would not, however, like to spend time in one that smoking was allowed. that would be hell on earth.
