What you should have said was something like "I love your brothers and sisters in the north. You guys should give them more aid. Do they like American beef up there?"

I just told them, "I don't like communists, South Korea should stop giving them aid." There were no comments at the table. No teachers have spoken to me since.

I'd have said " I don't think about them."

A good way to duck out of that loaded question is to simply say, "I believe it is a Korean issue and should be dealt with by Koreans."

I'd have said I feel pity for the populace, contempt for the leadership.

As long as I'm here I'm going to treat the Koreans as adults who can handle differing opinions.

Sure they are communists but they are people too. Even so, they are Koreans who are divided from their families in the South due to U.S./U.N. intervention. Communism is all they know and they are some of the sickest and poorest in the world. Show some compassion.

What an asinine comment. US/UN intervention prevented the entire peninsula from being communist.

Frankly I'm surprised. In my experience the older generation is quite passionate about North Korea, but anyone under the age of 40 doesn't seem to care. Some under 40 people have outright told me they don't care.

I once answered the question with a long debate about how the issue is very complex, there are two sides to the story, and a lot of people have died as a result. Then I said it would be great for the two to be united if it were ever feasible politically and economically.

One guy said I sounded "Just like Korean"

I subsequently went home and banged two chicks. At the same time! Wink

Sucks to hear they won't talk to you now...

You should've said

"North Koreans attacked the South, and since then they have had a dictatorship that starves its people and spread lies. They kidnap, kill, and rape people. Should I like them?"
