Hi all,

My school is doing its first ever summer camp. I've got a mix of ages from grade 6 to high school. I haven't done a summer camp before. I really don't want to bore the poor kids too much. After all, their friends are all on holidays and they are staying at school for a few extra weeks. I'm thinking of making a few different themes for the two weeks. Has anybody got any experience with summer camps? Some ideas would be greatly appreciated. Even those that haven't done them, i would love a few different ideas to mix things up.

I really hope to hear from you.

Thanks!

1 - Learn some magic tricks
2 - Travel the world - vacations and making vacation posters
3 - Dirty Jobs - a look at disgusting jobs no one wants
4 - Natural Disasters - Make a volcano
5 - Environmental Awareness - recycle - make recycled paper
6 - Create our own superhero - Write a comic book
7 - Holidays in different cultures
8 - First Aid - learn about it then practice on your friend
9 - Write a newspaper about camp
10 - Cooking day - sepuencing events - make some kind of food

I posted these ideas in another thread. This is my summer camp. My school is buying everything I need. I also put in time preparing because if I do then class in more fun for me.

You can do a Mexican Day.

Do some arts and crafts.

Teach some Mexican words that are common to English

Make Piatas.

Cooking class with tacos.

Go to a river and make the children cross while avoiding the teachers dressed like border patrol catch them. Those who are caught have to clean up duty. (Sorry off color joke)

Do a web search there are a lot of lesson plans, templates and ideas.

Also don't forget to do some kind of presentation on the last day when the parents pick up the students. Skits, a camp news show, group sing, some awards. Ect..

Movie night is always good. Gives the teachers a break. You will be tired. Maybe a dance night.

I highly recommend to not do a dance night. At one of my camps the Korean teachers tried to teach the students a dance. They didn't get past the first two moves. Now if its not coed or all boys, you might pull it off.

Dance night can be a dj(hiring a pro would be best but any one can do it) some colored lights some snack food. Basically teachers do nothing but supervise. Maybe some prizes, some Karoakee. It gives the kids a chance to socialize. My dance days are long gone. My only moves now are avoiding things on the sidewalk.
