People: Good advice about staying in Japan. However, you have to remember that I have only been here a total of 15 months. 4 years ago I also spent one year in Japan. I do not know any other teachers that make the kind of dough I make here either. At least I don't know any high school teachers that make this kind of money with work on the side like me. I happen to have a pretty good high school gig and my p/t job teaching TOEFL/TOEIC pays 4500 yen/hr. Since I generally do 15 hours a week there, it adds up pretty quick.
If I was to move to Seoul, in no way would I expect to earn more than a standard salary (2 million or slightly more) for the first few months. However, after a while, I am confident that I could nail down the right combo of jobs so that I'd be making a pretty good living. I have done it here in Japan -- and in Korea -- there seem to be endless opportunities to obtain work. If you think it is tough to get a good job in Seoul, it is much harder in Tokyo due to the stiffer competition and the lesser number of good opportunities. Why do you think South Korea has it's own job forum on Dave's Cafe??!!! Because of the thousands of opportunities, that's why.
I would only consider a move if I could land a GOOD job there before I leave Japan. A former colleague of mine did just that one year ago. She said that with my MA and experience I should have no problem getting a decent university job. Anyway, I don't want you people to think I am simply going to pack up and leave what I have here for so manhy uncertainties in Seoul. I will only go if and when the right opportunity is there. That is why I am posting -- to get info. on where to scan for the best jobs...
In Japan, many of the eikaiwas also prefer newbies because they can pay them the minimum salary and get away with it. Many of them would only take a newbie for that reason. Especially since anyone with experience would never want to work for the minimum. I would not be interested in a hogwan position, not a chance. I have the education and plenty of experience for a university job and I would look no lower. That I can assure you.
Thanks again for the posts. |

This seems an obvious point, and perhaps someone has already made it, but it would be pretty unusual for a university to hire someone without seeing them first for a teaching demo and interview. I interviewed at two unis last month, one emailed me on a Friday night asking me to do a demo on the Tuesday, the other emailed on a Sunday night asking me to come for an interview on Wednesday. Are you able to fly over here at such short notice? How did your friend get the job? |

| I believe that they wanted my friend to fly over for an interview. In fact, remember they did a telephone interview first but I believe that she flew over on a break from work here (about 6 days). I live within an hour's drive of Narita Airport, and for me to get to Seoul for a weekend would be quite easy just about whenever I want. It helps that I am done work on Fridays at 1:30pm! Of course, interviews aren't usually conducted on weekends. However, I culd certainly get away here if it was for a career opportunity. The 2 / 2.5 hour flight makes it great! Geez, you could commute back and forth every weekend if you wanted! |
