I was watching 60 minutes about genealogy and it said if you go back 8 generations you have 256 great,great.... grandparents. If you go back 20 generations you have over 1 million.

A family tree branches out so much. I tried to go back and do a family tree but it ended at my grandparents parents and couldn't go any farther. I did find out I have some Polish in me which I did not know. But just going back 3 generations by my 4 grandparents, the family tree was extensive. Then if you try to think about your great great grandparents siblings and their families I mean damn, I could see if you went back only 8 generations how everyone in at least Europe was somehow related.

How many poeple are "pure blood". Only of one nationality in lets say the last 5 generations. Can you even tell what someone ethnicity is anymore, everyone is so mixed. Seriously, this might be ignorance but I can't tell if someone is Asian, Arabic, Latino French... I had a friend who was half black half white, I swore for one year I thought she was a mUslim, her dad looked Muslim. Do you think in lets say 200 years there will be anybody that is "pure" meaning from only one nationality/ethnicity.

I did my genalogy but it ended quite quickly. I did find out my grandmothers father came over on a boat from Sweden in 1906 to America and his surname was shortened to Lind in order to Americanize him. If you go the Ellis Island website it can show you a picture of the boat they came over on and there signature which I though was cool. But then I was told I have this long family tree on how I am related to one of the members of the Mayflower??? John Wallace.

So what do you guys think??? Do I know everyone on this board by at least 7 degrees of seperation??? Or better yet, by relation

Ok, I really don't like proofreading, so ignore fragmeted sentences, mispellings, and other crap.

this is my 11th cousin. with a mother whose maiden name is richard (say it ree-shard, tabarnak!) it's not such a stretch. i also have an ancestor who was on samuel champlain's first mission to canada.

i was also told that there's a certain (high) percentage of people who have a genetic link to genghis khan. that's interesting.

I thought it was six degrees. What, did Kevin Bacon disown us?

I had a cousin who was big into genealogy (she was a mormon). She did out the entire family history on my mom's side back many, many generations and quite a bit on my dad's, although his was a bit more difficult as he is American Indian (Odawa); when I mention my dad's ancestry, Koreans smile and say something like, "Oh, we share the same ancestors!". Two notables in our family (mom's side) are Abraham Lincoln and Daniel Boone. My mom's first ancestors to North America came before 1602 (that was when the first ancestral birth in N.A. was recorded).

We are probably all more closely related than many would like to admit...

Yeah, your right. I am babysitting my 8 month old niece and it is the first time away from her mom, so I have been not been able to have clear thought or make a cohesive sentence through the screaming. Best form of Birth control ever. OMG, I am just so tired. I finally have relief as my mother has stepped in. 2 1/2 hours til bedtime, it is going so slow

And yeah, I like the kevin bacon link where you can put in any celebrity and you can link by 6 degrees, I just don't feel like looking for it.

Oh well, back to hell I go

Sorry for not writing more eloquently, but I thought since you all teach Korean kids you would have no trouble with my jibberish.

Genealogy is pretty fun...I like knowing where I come from (which is pretty much everywhere in Europe, btw). It's a big tough for me to do, though. Coming from about 6 generations of Latter-day Saints, most of the research that can be done is already done.

When I was teaching US History last year, I told my kids that my ancestors moved West in the mid-1800's. They all gave me odd looks & said, "Miss, how'd you know that?" Most of them don't know beyond their grandparents.

Thus, I have come up with a new project for the first quarter of next year. :0)

My dad has been a genealogist for a long time. When his grandmother turned 100 he made chart up with her parents at the top. Took up most of the living room. He used to do it all on paper and typewriter, talk about dedicated. I remember going with him to interview distant relatives. It was boring for me at the time.

Anyone use genealogy software?

My nana was the geneologist in my family. Before she passed away, she had our family records going back a good 12-13 generations, I think. Course, it was a bit spotty in the 10-13 generation range. One of these days, I'll have to track down the books she kept on our family. I think I'm the only one who has an interest in keeping them.

We have a family reunion every year in my hometown. Last summer was our 75th and we had more than 300 people show from across the US and Canada (plus myself and a two families from Europe). I'm amazed at how it's grown over the years.
