My first visa in early 2007 has M on the entries straight from the Chicago consulate in my passport, but my 2nd visa (1 month ago) only had an S for single entry where I'd void my E-2 visa if I left on vacation with that this Summer or Winter. Recognizing this detail, I went ahead and requested multiple entry today while getting my ARC since I'm traveling outside of Korea this year and knew I'd better get it done in advance. I paid an 50,000 won for the multiple entry addition to my visa.

Why has this changed or was this a mistake on the Chicago consulates part that made me pay my dues for the privilege of leaving Korea on vacation? I understood Americans automatically get a multiple entry visa in there passports. Has this changed?

Did you get a new work place and a new visa or did you just stay at the same school and get the original visa extended?

every time I turn around someone tells me it's NOT automatic for Americans but I've always received one - I don't know why - my most recent E2 was in March of this year - I checked and yes, it's a multi-E

another FT swore his American friends had to go get theirs changed - I don't know mybe it's something to do w/our pps or something? who knows. guess everyone should request it from now on Rolling Eyes

Canadians don't get multis automatically. They have to pay for them.
Every American I've talked to has said theirs was automatic.

Yes, I changed job and got a new visa.

Public school or private?

From what I've been able to gather, the difference seems to be related to who authorized your visa issuance.

If your visa was authorized by Immigration in Korea (i.e., you got a visa issuance number, probably by e-mail: this usually applies to people working for hagwons or universities), they issue the multiple-entry visa automatically.

If your visa was authorized by a provincial office of education (in other words, you got a letter of appointment rather than a visa issuance number), they seem to be issuing only a single-entry visa.

I don't claim to know the reason behind this, but this is the pattern I've been able to discern from reading numerous posts about this issue.

Americans are entitled to a multiple entry visa. Immigration in Korea can make money on your having to renew. Another K-racket.

this is possible in my case - while I have worked for SMOE at that time my visa was transferred and I didn't receive a new one

this time I'm working at a private elem so they would have bypassed the office of edu -

very interesting Shocked

Back in the bad old days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I remember a poster finding out the hard way that Americans got a single reentry automatically, not a multiple. Maybe that's changed though

Hmm, actually got the search function to work and came up with this: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=37906

Bottom line, the multiple entry isn't automatic on a visa renewal

Renewal is a different story altogether.

Americans are theoretically issued a multiple-entry visa when the visa is initially issued. Everyone has to cough up for the multiple re-entry permit when they extend their stay in-country, because the initial one only remains valid for the duration of the original visa.

The issue being addressed in this thread is that some Americans have been receiving only a single-entry visa upon initial issuance (i.e., at the embassy/consulate).

That's because they want you out of the country as much as possible.
