no this is a great thread. yesterday one of my privates brought along her sister (hold those dirty thoughts boys)
sister works for busan city hall and wanted to know about tourism here and what could be done to improve it. i said that busan (and most of Korea as a whole) has wonderful places to see and visit, but it simply doesnt give a crap of promoting them well enough. i compared websites of tokyo and singapore to busan's website and her jaw dropped when she could see how much better their information and promotion was. also, busan's official page didnt even come up until the 4th page on google which i told her was a big no-no.
funniest part was when i went to the UK's largest travel agencies website (thomas cook) and used the 'popular destinations' scroll bar box. japan, china, singapore, malaysia, philippines were all in there. Korea was not even in the list. see for yourself at http://www.thomascook.com/destinations/
Korea has to do a lot more to promote itself that's for sure. a lot more than a slogan and a shitty website (which is all they have done so far) |

Interesting post, spyro25.
Say, whats the url for the Busan's website?
I went to the site you mentioned. And, yes, Thomas Cook is one of the biggest, oldest, most respected names in international tourism. See "A Passage to India" if you don't believe this.
http://www.thomascook.com/destinations/
I opened the "select destination" box. There sure are a lot of countries, including:
Andorra
Antigua
Bulgaria
Estonia
Lapland
Malta
Singapore
Sri Lanka
Thailand
etc.
No Korea or South Korea.
If it's any consolation, I did notice that Iraq and Afghanistan are not on the list, either. |

Those are all in Europe or tropical Asian areas with a lot of beaches or they are former colonies of the UK or other European countries. No surprise there.
Some Westerners and self-hating Koreans are just using this issue to take a cheap shot at Koreans. Koreans could do somersaults in front of Incheon Airport and you still wouldn't attract those British tourists nor should we.
Frankly, I don't think we want British tourists here since they have such a terrible reputation for arrogant and haughty behavior with locals. Also, poor Southeast Asian countries probably need the money more than Korea does.

"Research by online travel service Expedia suggests Brits abroad are the least well-regarded by foreigners.
They are the rudest, meanest, worst-behaved, most linguistically incompetent and least adventurous holidaymakers, the study published on Friday claims...The Brits also seemed to make least effort in speaking the local language, "

"More recent surveys have focused on how often Brits get arrested overseas, with 1,549 British tourists being arrested in Spain alone last year. There were also a large number of arrests in the US, Cyprus, France and Germany, and the British Embassy in Prague reported a "disproportionate number" of arrests, usually related to drunken behavior." |

Just wait, some netizens will read this, misinterpret it, and in a month or two we will in fact see Koreans doing summersaults in front of Incheon Airport in a misguided attempt to woo tourists. |

OP, what's your problem? Your threads are overly negative and you seem to have a serious problem with Korea and Koreans.
Time to go home maybe? |
My, my, my. Korean hospitality rears its friendly face!
What's your problem?
Did you ever think that it is attitudes like yours that are why Korea does not get more foreign visitors?
If you read my post carefully, you will see I did not criticize Korea; I criticized that pathetically stupid ad for Seoul running on CNN that show's a photographer shooting a roll of film of all pictures of roof tiles. There's a difference, at least in most people's minds. But apparently not in the mind of a Korean.
But now I will criticize Korea: This inability to take criticism, suggestions or ask for advice is one of Korea's biggest weaknesses. It has gotten her into trouble before, and it will get it into trouble again.
And, the truth is many, if not most, Koreans, deep down, do not want foreigners here.
I suppose if foreigners came for a visit and told Koreans what they want to hear, how wonderful Korea is, how superior it is to their home country and every other country in the world, they would tolerate visitors for a brief period, say a week or two, or maybe a year to teach Englishee. But Western visitors don't. You know why? It's not true. And Westerners aren't habitual liars, like Koreans.
So, apparently, Korea's tourist trade consists largely of other Asians who come to Korea to shop.
Be careful what you wish for, samd. One day soon Korea may not even be able to afford to bring in English teachers, given the economic mess you are creating for yourself. |
You seem to think I'm Korean. I'm not. Don't project your prejudices, which are obvious in this post, onto me. |

Seems you're saying this is a great thread because it's factual, am I understanding you right? Because your post about the shitty website and shitty slogan is accurate, where as some of the bitter stuff people like Evanzinho vastly differs from anything you said in your post. |

Korea has the potential to be much more than it is. The foundation is there, the money is there (almost), the land is there, the food is there... It's like a puzzle that hasn't been put together properly, reflecting the rushed industrialized economy that is actually is. Korea is usually only seen as a business destination. For me it's more of a "gemstone" in the bottom of a treasure box, the hardest stone to find in the box, and not a worthless one. |

Britons are 'the worst-behaved tourists'
Telegraph (04/06/2008)

Britons are the worst-behaved tourists, according to European hoteliers.
But hoteliers worldwide consider visitors from the UK as second only to the Japanese as the best tourists, a poll by travel company Expedia found.
Britons got the poor rating from European hoteliers for being rude, messy and loud, with Japanese, German and American visitors the best-behaved.
But big spending from Britons abroad appears to have gone down well with hoteliers from areas outside Europe. |

The tables seem to be turning for Koreans' preferred overseas destinations. In place of traditionally favored countries like Italy and Germany, Koreans are spending an increasing amount of money in other Asian countries, including the Philippines, Singapore and China....
However, the United States still led the overseas spending for these travelers with 419.8 billion won, ranking No. 1 in total spending by Koreans. China, Japan and Canada followed with 165.5, 132 and 59.8 billion won. |

Korea has a fair number of tourists annually, as seen in the rankings compiled the World Tourism Organization.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_rankings
At number 35 with 6.2 million visitors per year, Korea is only 4 spots behind Japan and has about half as many tourists as the much-touted Thailand. Regardless of what you believe, Korea is a popular tourist destination (well within the top 50). How many of the tourists are Westerners? My guess is about 10%, but I don't think that's a much lower percentage than in Japan.
Why some people make claims without knowing any facts bewilders me, but such is the nature of Internet message boards. |
