I work at a Public High School and and it says in my contract that I will hold extra classes during the summer vacation. My coteacher said the school will not pay me for these classes because they take place during my vacation time.

If I am holding summer classes during the break, does that not mean I am doing extra work and therefore they have to pay me for such work?

I'm a little confused on the issue and want to clarify things. If they owe me for the extra classes I want to make sure I get paid for them.

Usually you are not entitled to the same amount of vacation time that Korean teachers have. Nearly all public school teachers have to run a camp for 1-3 weeks. The rest of the time is your official vacation.

There was a thread a couple weeks ago about getting pay for camps and most public school teachers don't get paid extra.

Hey

When I did vacation classes at my high school I didn't get paid any extra. But, the Korean teachers were also doing them aswell and they didn't get paid extra either.

However, if you do any classes in addition to your scheduled/contracted class hours in the week then you are entitled to overtime pay.

Really? The students are paying for these extra classes, no? Where's the money going?

Is the question about getting paid at all for doing the summer classes, or getting paid on top of the normal salary we're supposed to receive?

I asked this question to Dain Bae at the GEPIK orientation last year and she said that even if the students are paying money for the classes, the teacher should not receive it. She said the money should go into the school's English fund

What they're discussing is whether a PS teacher should get paid extra (in addition to their regular monthly salary) for doing the so-called English camp at their own school. The GEPIK contract does not provide any additional pay for doing this camp at your own school -- just your regular monthly salary.

IF you teach more than 22 hours at a camp (or whatever it may say in the contract) THEN you are entitled to overtime. You are obligated to teach up to 28 hours/week if they ask you but you will get your 20k/hour OT pay. The money the school receives for the camp is presumably something they already account for when the pay scale for NSET's are drawn up. Most English camps are a bonus for the school b/c our pay actually comes from the central office (this is for SMOE I'm not sure what GEPIK does).

Whether or not that money is put into anything beyond the principals' "I'm a Korean boss therefore I'm a demi-god" fund is anyone's guess.

I actually don't understand why this insult is here. The OP was simply making a request for informaton, and unlike many on this forum, he was not obnoxious and his behavior in no way invited insults as far as I can see.

Having a bad day?

Thanks again for the info. It's a shame some people on these forums have to resort to insults as answers.

A public school teacher who can't use the proper words; and is so 'out to lunch' as to understand only part of their contract is a twit. Rolling Eyes

That's my point. Though I was told that there is an extra couple hundred dollars I can use for my camp, so my school is giving my a credit card to go out and purchase supplies
