i really wonder how our salaries rank in korea. i can't see the average salary being very high. granted there's the cream at the top who own big fat cribs but there's also a whole bunch of people working at minimum wage. and minimum wage in korea is low. damn low.
we don't rank at the top but i figure we must be high middle class.maybe just middle class. |
Here's an interesting comparison. I just got hired at a university, on the basis of two years experience and an MA. My girlfriend is a newly qualified nurse in her first year at a biggish hospital near Seoul. Whose salary do you think is higher? |

| I know a couple of nurses who are working 6 days a week for 1 million a month (1 is a dentist's assistant, the other works at a skin hospital). Their husbands make a bit more, but a big portion of their salaries goes to housing. Researchers (with PhD) get a starting salary of 1.5 million, both at uni or at a private research company. One other girl (with BS) I know works in an oriental hospital, practically 7 days a week, for 1 million a month. |

| We work (if you can call it that) far less hours. Factor it on a hourly scale. |
Than become a hooker. You work as little as 15 minutes and make $100. Sounds like the best paying job on the planet according to your critera. You need to balance work time and hourly pay. Plus look at job performance on longer hours. Teachers starting tanking after 20 and are washed up at 30. Office job? I can do 40 standing on my head. I work in an office I know what these guys make. Remember they're putting 2 kids through hogwans, own a home (ok their parents bought most of it) own a car, and support 4 people on their salaries. Can the average hogwan teacher do that? How about at 40 hours of work? Nope.

I doubt the average hooker works only 15 minutes and makes $100. However I will defer to your obviously superior knowledge of this subject. |

i'll go with you as a uni. prof. it has to be you. one of the best paying job for a woman in korea is a flight attendant and they make just a bit less than we do (without including the housing and the plane ticket)
well, i guess a woman doctor would make more but woman aren't exactly encouraged to follow such work in korea |

Of course yours is going to higher. The point here is that if the ESL industry in Korea really want to legitimize itself, it needs to pay more for those who have experience in the field and are willing to make a serious investment their professional working life here. In that with the salary earned one could buy an apartment, car, vacation, make savings for retirement, and so on. Sure it can be done now, but in compairsons with ohter workers of the same gender, same education level, same length of time working, we make horrible less than they do. OK, you want your University job to be compaired to a female working in nursing, and nothing wrong with this, all fine and good, but this being Korean reality we are dealing with, one is sadly mistaken and is out short. Short of money that is. |

Well that's a well thought out answer. Your thinking skills are developing nicely. As always though, you avoid questions and comments that challenge you silly myths with glib rude comments. Thats ok, I wouldn't expect a well thoughout answer from you anyway. You don't seem bright enough to grasp simple concepts or to be able to respond in a thoughtful ways. So, save yourself the typing and just debate with yourself at home. You should be a master of debating yourself at home after all these years. Hey I can be glib too.

Actually there are a lot better paying jobs than flight attendants. Thats just a glamour job to Korean girls. Every Korean woman I know who works full-time makes good money. 3 million is the low end for the ones I know, and many of them get free housing on top of that too. A lot of single working girls get that as a perk. These are obviously not secretaries and check-out girls, but educated and qualified girls. I think the nurse depending on the hospital could be doing better than the EFLer.

Oh dear me. Someone has no sense of humor. That's okay, I didn't expect one from you. You were the one that brought up the hooker, pal, not me. As that was an obviously silly comment I gave it the reply that it deserved. Ask a jerky question, you get a jerky answer. We were comparing bus drivers and hakwon teachers, until you butted in from left field with your comment about hookers. Be serious and I will.
Nowhere in my post did I say hours were the ONLY consideration. I said in my initial post that they were PART of the total package that makes a hakwon teacher's job more rewarding (overall) than a bus driver's We were not debating what is the best job, only whether a bus driver's or a hakwon teacher's is.
BTW why are you putting a post by another person in your reply to me? If you are trying to make a point, you should include the original person's name. Don't try and make it look like that's what I wrote. Include the poster's name. |

Correct! In our case, doing better by 50,000 a month. The point which I was implying in my 'trick' question (sorry Weatherman) was that, whatever the statistics show, our EFL salaries seem pretty ordinary compared to qualified Korean workers in biggish institutions. |

However this begs the question. Would the majority of people here rather work longer hours for more pay or less hours for less pay? Certainly qualified Korean workers in biggish institutions earn more. But many of them do not have free housing. And most of them likely work considerably longer hours than the average ESL teacher. Don't look at salary as the only consideration. You win some and you lose some. That's the nature of the game. No job is going to be perfect. |

This is the style that Mr.Mankind prefers. Infantile comebacks, instead of a mature style of debating. For someone who claims to have a Master's degree, this is very childish. Attack the poster instead of the message. This is what people with small minds do, they resort to personal attacks when they get defeated in an argument. However I will give Mr. Mankind the benefit of the doubt. Care to address the issues, or can you only revert to name calling and sixth grade behaviour? |

Who knows what he's trying to say?
It would seem that with a couple of well-aimed posts I've reduced him to babbling childish taunts. It's quite sad really. You'd expect that for someone as educated as Mr. Mankind claims to be , he'd be able to debate in a more mature and scholarly fashion. It would appear that those expectations are unrealistic. |
