Is there anyone out there that could post what should be on a contract for a public school and how specific the contract gets.
How specific does the school let me get on the contract to protect my interests? Thanks Smile

From everything I've been told, public school contracts are pretty much set in stone... So even if they didn't protect your "interests" (If I knew what you were refering to I could look it up on my contract for you - SMOE) there would not be a whole lot you could do about it...

The following are couple of areas on the contract that I am talking about:
-Apartment
-Deposit on apartment

-What utilities that I am responsible for

When it is all said and done should I have a lawyer read over the contract before I sign it?

I doubt that having a lawyer look over it will make the slightest bit of difference.

It also depends on what you mean by your 'interests'?

It depends on the accomodation that you get. I pay for my internet and landline, that's it. The electricity and gas are paid for by the school. Generally EPIK will set aside 300 000 won a month for your rent subsidy, so because my apartment only costs 180 000 won a month they pay for those two utilities as well. Very sweet. This is not the same everywhere.

Any and all fees, charges, costs, taxes, expenses, etc. additional to monthly renting fees and/or key money incurred in using the housing shall be borne by Employee. 3. Employer may provide temporary housing until the appropriate housing for Employee becomes available. If Employer is not able to provide housing for Employee(or if Employee decides to find housing on their own), Employer shall provide Employee with 300,000 Korean won per month, as a rent subsidy, in lieu of the housing set forth in the foregoing 1.

Pretty similar here too.

SMOE's is a little different as there is a few threads on here about it. Maybe Co-op building etc.

The contracts are pretty much set in stone. Lots of people sign them and have no problems. You do have a bit more power than Hagwons because if your school is being difficult you can take it higher to get a solution. You're more likely to have more power to change aspects of it when it comes round to renewal negotiations.

If you really want to you can fight to get the 300 000 won a month security bond taken out. It is possible. I'd be more inclined to let a PS take that money rather than a Hagwon because you'll get it back at the end of the contract.

1. They provide your apartment, aparently after having a discussion with you about housing...
2. 500k... Again, gov't contracts are pretty non-negociable (from what I've been told here and elsewhere) but I wouldn't be worried about it, because its the govenment you're sure to get it back
3. Can't rightly say... I didn't - but then again I don't have a lawyer versed in Korean contract law either...

I would have loved to change my PS contract to protect "my interests" but it was not possible. I think that's why they always drag their asses on mailing the contracts out... so there is no time to request any changes!

Things I would have changed:

1. Do summer camp for no extra pay (I specifically asked about this before they sent the contract and was told I'd get extra for summer camp!)

2. The mysterious 6,000/h for "extra duties" thing.

3. Working in elementary or middle schools (would have had middle schools taken out)

I first want to thank everyone for the information, but I have the following questions:
-When you mention "apartment of faculty residence in Seoul Education Training." Is this an apartment or dorm style apartment ?
-I prefer not to live in a dorm or studio apartment. Is there any way to get this written into the contract or removed? Do they always give an apartment? Thanks Smile
