I was.

This is pretty clearly a serious (i.e., it's costing me a significant amount of money) contract violation.

Has anyone had any positive experiences with Dain Bae in getting her to advocate for them in such a situation with their school?

Call her immediately. She has advocated for people in the past. This is a clear violation of contract terms. Update us.

I was refused the 100K contract payraise, but that is a grey area in the contract. I kept the job because I had already paid for the airfare for the homeleave and I would have lost out more if I had quit.

There should be no way that the school can refuse to pay your airfare as per the contract. You should get paid within 15 days of when you come back from your home leave.

Yes, keep us updated.

(I really don't understand why management at these schools can't see that they will spend the same or more to get a new teacher and that this penny pinching just leads to bad feelings.)

My home-leave airfare is gonna cost my school 2.4mill. Gonna buy the tic this week and submit copy of it and the receipt...then go back to the airline and get it refunded. Direct flights to JFK r quite expensive at the moment. Remember, they owe u a round trip DIRECT (non-stop) flight (if ur renewing) to the airport closest to ur home.

Foreign Scholars Merit Equal Status
JoongAng Daily (June 14, 2002)

Quote:
Foreign professors tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc....

According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect

Late pay... worth the wait?

Are the salary and benefits of Korean teachers sometimes late or denied? What is their status in most public schools or universities?

I think, when you say "non-stop" you mean "no layover", no? For me to go home, it is simply impossible to get a non-stop flight to the airport closest to my home (in my case, Buffalo Airport). I have to change planes a minimum of 2 times: Narita and Chicago/Detroit/Minneapolis. But it's all one flight.

Ok...u have to stop to get a local connection but u shouldn't have to stop at Narita. Korean air has non-stop to jfk and that's what I'm going with. Of course I could get cheaper ticket if I had to stop in Japan or Anchorage or somewhere but that wouldn't be a direct fligh, now would it? BTW, I've flown in and out of Buffalo airport many times on a friends twin engine plane in the dead of winter in heavy snows. Many times u could just barely make out the runway.

As a former travel agent, there is a common misconception about the terms used in the airline industry. I assumed spliff knew this by putting non-stop in parenthesis. Non-Stop refers to just that. The plane does not stop. Direct refers to a flight that stops along the way, but it is not needed to change planes. Connecting flights are such that you must switch planes. This is common knowledge for travel agents, but the information is not widely disseminated. =)
