I'm going to be buying a new laptop to replace the one I bought 2nd hand. The thing is I'm not exactly up on my laptop knowledge so would like some advice/recommendations from the crew here.

I'm considering the Ripple Tablet T8300 here is a better link (use IE for both of those links) but am concerned about it being a no name computer - if you know anything about it please let me know.

What I'm looking for:

coreduo or higher processor (single core is a deal breaker)
12" or smaller (larger is a deal breaker)
HDD 120gb or larger (smaller is a deal breaker)
2gb of ram or more (less is okay, if upgradable)
tablet (optional but preferred)
video memory not shared
screen resolution 1280x800 or higher (1400 x *** preferred)
lightweight (as light as possible 1.7kg or less preferred)

Budget is 1,000,000 though I could go as high as 1.2 if I have to.

Will be buying before the semester begins on September first but I'm in no rush.

It might be a rebadged HP tx model.

I think its worthy for a 12.1" tablet though its a little on the heavy side (2.1kg!) and I'm not a fan of the headphone/microphone jack at the front.

The specs are pretty good for the price though the 4 cell battery doesn't look like it will last too long. I think Centrino 2 would perform much better with this setup, which the notebook may have allowance for considering that it's a DIY tablet. I haven't seen 1440x900 running on a 13" notebook let alone a 12" unless its a Sony. You're pretty much stuck on 1280x800.

Any special reason why you want a tablet? This one uses a passive digitiser which means you use your fingers not a special pen.

Check out tabletpcreview.com for stuff on tablet PCs (it usually has everything). It seems that the HP Pavilion tx2500 is quite popular there. The Dell Inspiron 13 and Vostro 1310 sounds good for under $700 US though they're not tablets.

A passive touch screen is the common one that you will see. It's either resistive (responds to pressure, most are this) or capacitive (responds to finger press only, like the iPhone).

Advantages-Cheap, don't need to worry about losing or breaking an expensive stylus.

Disadvantages- It will repsond to a push only. There's no easy way to do mouse overs and such.

An active digitiser has a pen with a little transmitter in it. The pen is bigger, bulkier and more expensive. When held close to the screen the Tablet will detect its position and move the mouse pointer as you move the screen around.

Advantages- Can be used exactly like a proper mouse.

Disadantages-expensive and you need to look after it. Can't use your fingers in a jam.

If you're buying a tablet or convertible you need to invest the time to fully understand the pros and cons of this. It's argubly more important than the CPU and other specs.
