I recently cancelled a dentist appointment because I couldn' affort it at the time. I later told my friends how much previous trips cost, and they think I was ripped off. On both previous visits, I took my medical card.
On the first visit I said I wanted my teeth thouroughly cleaned, but she simply scraped off the plaque. The cost was 60K.
She told me to come back for a full check up as I had cavaties. So I went back. There didn't seem to be any check up to speak of, but I got my teeth cleaned and polished. This would take one trip back home. The cost was 60K. So I paid 120K for what would've cost about 70K in rip-off Britain.
My friend recently chipped his ceramic tooth. To get it repair cost just 4K. That's not a typo - 4K.
Something sounds fishy. A basic trip to the hygienist (two trips it seems in the country) costs 120K, but repair work costs 4K.
Oh, on the seconf trip, they said they wanted to replace all two fillings and two crowns that I have. I only have two of each anyway. They were insistant that gold fillings were best, and they wanted to put in pretty expensive crowns. The work was gonna cost over 400K.
Are they trying to take the foreigner for as much money as possible?

Completely useless info. I've been to Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. I know how cheap dental work is in those countries. |

Yeah, so you wait until you get back to K-land to get your work done.
You should have priced places before you had whatever it is you're doing done. It's called shopping around. I get scaling done every two months at the dentist in my school for free. |

Ive heard some insurances dont cover dental... but im not too sure about that. I went to the dentist and had a root canal, 10 visits cost me about 50,000 won total... I had a cavity filled for 8,000 won... I guess it also depends on the work you need done, I asked about teeth whitening and they estimated 300,000 won. |

I recently got some work done. Two cavities and a crown (part of my tooth broke off). It only cost me 350,000. I think NHS covered one cavity and the rest I had to pay for. Recently a relative commented it cost them $800 for a crown in the US. |

I recently had a wisdom tooth pulled and one cavity filled.
Costs:
initial visit - just a check-up w/x-ray (w/o cleaning): 4~6,000 won (can't remember)
2nd visit - wisdom tooth pulled with stitches: 5,500 won
final visit - stitches pulled (2,500 won) and white filling (80,000)
A silver (amalgam) filling would be 6,500 won, but I figured 80,000 won for the white is still way cheaper than back home.
By far, my experience with a Korean dentist is the best I've ever had. The office was incredibly clean and techno-savvy. The cameras rocked! I was able to see before and after pictures. Take my advice and get your work done here before going home - it is definitely worth your money. (This advice is especially for you Americans.) |

Thanks for this info, ESL girl. I have an appointment tomorrow morning and this puts me at a bit more ease. What area are you in? I'm goin' to the MIR Dental hospital in Daegu. |

So, I'm now convinced that I was overcharged. 120K to get my teeth cleaned and polished seems extortionate compared to what others have been have been charged for far more demanding work.
Captain Marlow is going soon, but he's gonna take a Korean with him. I keep y'all with the results.
