WASHINGTON - President Bush on Monday approved the execution of an Army private, the first time in over a half-century that a president has affirmed a death sentence for a member of the U.S. military.
With his signature from the Oval Office, Bush said yes to the military's request to execute Ronald A. Gray, the White House confirmed. Gray had had been convicted in connection with a spree of four murders and eight rapes in the Fayetteville, N.C., area over eight months in the late 1980s while stationed at Fort Bragg.
"While approving a sentence of death for a member of our armed services is a serious and difficult decision for a commander in chief, the president believes the facts of this case leave no doubt that the sentence is just and warranted," White House press secretary Dana Perino said.

But would Obama have hesitated?
I like Bush. He has that straightforward way of doing what obviously needs doing, without a second thought. |

I am not really a death penalty advocate, but I don't care if he is former military or not. A crime is a crime, and that's all. |

I"d like to ask why he isn't doing anything about all the young GIs running around free and easy who have raped, beaten, tortured and killed many Iraqis? Or the fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters of someone hogtied and blindfolded and hidden away to be tortured and killed secretly between runs for Subway sandwiches......
Oh I forgot. They aren't Americans. They don't count.
Let's be honest, Bush doesn't have a clue and he probably signed it without even knowing who or what was going on.

Ugh, not to beat a dead horse or anything...
but Bush is the one who is sanctioning all of the deaths in Iraq. I agree with the OP, that with Bush's way of thinking, the Iraquis "don't count" although I would hesitate to say that all American citizens feel that way.
What I really feel is important here is that we don't cast judgement on the American military who are currently serving in Iraq. I am an American, I do not agree with this war, however, I refuse to be just one more of those ignorant and arrogant people who believes that they know everything. A fair number of the troops in Iraq right now did not receive proper training, nor are they getting proper emotional and psychological support from the army.
What the HELL planet are you from where you think that soldiers in Iraq are running around "free and easy"? Do you even know one freakin' veteran from this war? All of a sudden, rereading what you wrote, I am furious at that sentence. Free and easy. Right. I know at least twenty veterans from this war off the top of my head. All of them have horror stories, all of them. You think that driving along and getting hit with IUDs is FREE and EASY? You think that having to determine whether or not the fourteen year old boy with a gun in his hand is a real threat or someone just trying to defend themselves is EASY? Do you seriously think that watching your friends getting blown to pieces while you deal with terrorists using children as body shields is a f*cking CAKEWALK?
Oh my god. The ignorance on this board abounds.
Have there been horrible deeds done by a few troops in Iraq? Yes. I'm not going to deny that. Lynndie England and the whole Haditha debacle are horrible marks on the US military record. I am not defending those actions. Many people make many poor decisions in high stress situations, and most, if not nearly all of them are ill-equipped to deal with the trauma they are experiencing in this war, many of them seeing combat for the first time.
So don't you DARE go making judgements on a situation that you cannot even fathom being in. |

Off-topic. Try to keep your anti-American rants to the right threads, mmkay? |

If this case is as morally black and white as you may find it, than perhaps the decision was EASY.
But if that decision was a difficult one to accept, then why isn't it natural, or even detrimental to, hesitate?
Making snap decisions and sticking with them may not be the WORST thing. But knowing that's what you do, and then not giving it a second thought; that sounds like folly. |
