This happened about a week ago. I suppose it's a good a time as any to write about it. It's pretty funny.

Anyway, I live in Suwon and I hopped up to Uiwang on the subway to visit a friend in the afternoon and came back to Suwon at around 11:00pm. The subway wasn't that crowded, so I sat down next to an English speaking Pakistani man in his late 40s/early 50s.

We began talking. He asked me if I was a teacher, I said yes, and he asked me how long I had been in Korea. I told him a year. He asked me if I spoke Korean, I replied "some" and he struck up a conversation with the girl next to me in Korean to demonstrate how well he could speak. He told me that he has been in Korea for fifteen years.

Then he told me that he wished he was white... he said he wanted to be a teacher, and was educated, but they would refuse to hire a "black" Pakistani man. I told him that it was unfortunate, and that some day I hoped he could get a teaching job in Korea. I was being pretty sincere since I agreed wholeheartedly.

Then, he asked me to marry him. Yes, I repeat: he asked me to marry him. He said that since I was from Canada, two men could marry and then he could (eventually) get his Canadian citizenship and move to Canada. He promised that we wouldn't have to have sex... what a relief.

Anyway, after this random outburst he started mock-praying, asking for repetence from his god. He said "I know this is a sin, to marry another man, but it isn't for love! It is only for financial reasons and for my own well being." I nodded, didn't say much, and then he said he would pay me handsomely if I could accomodate him.

I was about to say "how much?" Then I thought about doing it (for one second) if he offered more than $50,000... and I knew this was money he wouldn't have. Then my self-respect kicked in along with the realization that he was probably crazy. That and the whole "how would I explain this to other people" thing. So I politely nodded and didn't say much... He asked for my phone number and I gave it to him, but messed up one of the digits so he wouldn't be able to figure it out. Then he asked for my email, which I did give him, knowing that it's easy to block communications if it ever became too much of a hassle. I'm curious to find out more about it though--not that I'd ever go through with it or even reply, I just want to know how much he'd actually pay.

That being said, does anyone want to marry a middle aged Pakistani man for money? If he emails me I can send you his email address Laughing He seemed nice enough, but it was very inappropriate for him to start this conversation up on a subway. Quite possibly the weirdest thing that has happened to me this month. Rolling Eyes

Money up front (of the amount you named or higher) and I'm game.

I'm all for exposing and exploiting the flaws of popular " sacred institutions".

Do you think Canada needs more foreigners with problems? It needs people who are mentally stable, with qualifications, and who are going to be productive, and that applies to the U.S. I am all for charging Canadian women or men who marry someone to get cash and aid someone to defraud the Canadian people, immigration wise.

Disregarding any preconcieved notions about the "sanctity of marriage" or what effect this will have on your future relationships (probably will give your future wife a chuckle)

The reward to penalty ration is pretty high here. Let's say best case scenario: You marry, no sex, and you earn 50,000 (US? Candian? lmao won?) It would obviously be in your best interest from a financial standpoint.

The biggest issue here probably taxing you is: can you trust him? I seriously doubt he just wants to spoon his way into your knickers... I mean, you just met the guy (and despite anyone else's biases, being gay doesn't mean they will jump just about anyone).

Besides that I'd only be wary it's a scam. I mean, his reasons for marriage are completely valid on his end. Honestly, I know people in his similar situation and they would easily pay that sum to earn citizenship.

I'd find out more from him and continue contacts. Honestly, he is paying you handsomely for this. The least you can do is find out more.

Potential pitfall: when you "divorce" he can take you for half of everything including the amount he paid you up front.

Somebody who wants a Canadian passport to become a Teacher is clearly going to be far from loaded.

I enjoy witnessing the birth of xenophobia.

I encourage you to step off the horse and try a little reductionism.

PM me when he e-mails you. Let him know I am OK with the fact that a he may have the occasional itch that needs to be scratched (if ya know what I mean) as long as the lights are off and he does the laundry and cooking. Flowers every so often would be a nice touch as well.

This is not about xenophobia. The Canadian Government takes immigration fraud seriously whether it entails former Nazis coming, war criminals, or those who want to harm Canadians as people know from what almost happened in Toronto last year. We have to run background checks on people. The man discussed by the OP seemed to be very odd, and Canada doesn't need people like that to immigrate. It needs immigrants who can integrate, assimilate somewhat etc... The progressive Dutch believe in that.

I am sorry, but you are trying to say that just because you don't respect the institution of marriage and don't like it, you don't mind defrauding the Canadian Government to take some money from a would-be-immigrant .

It is a major violation of the law that the major of Canadians and Americans, I assure you, would oppose. I just don't think it's funny to say you would allow someone to break immigration law, because you think marriage is stupid, and you want money. Immigrants made Canada great and are needed but those who don't embrace Canadian values and immigration fraud isn't what Canada needs. I don't mean to insult you, and I respect the fact that you don't care for marriage. That's your right.
