Gov't Reacts to China's Ieodo Claims

Friday, August 8, 2008 14:29:27

The government plans to demand that China correct its description of South Koreas Ieodo reef as Chinese territory.

A Seoul official said Friday that Seoul and Beijing had agreed in 2006 that Ieodo is not subject to territorial disputes as it is not an island but a submerged set of rocks.

Accordingly, the official said the Seoul government will take proper diplomatic actions on Beijing's claims including a request for a swift correction of the description.

Chinas agency responsible for maritime affairs said on its Web site that the reef located between South Korea and China is Chinese territory, arguing that it lies within Chinas exclusive economic zone.

The Seoul official, however, stressed that Ieodo falls under Koreas jurisdiction by international standards as it is situated 149 kilometers southwest of Korea's southernmost island of Marado and 247 kilometers northeast of the nearest Chinese island.

I am interested in seeing exactly how far Korea will go in standing up to China.

South Korea is like a typical bully. All swagger and tough talk to "younger brother" who has a pacifist constitution. They'll knuckle under to "older brother" if they get pissed. That or exchange it for concessions on Goguryeo and China's claims to their history.
