I want to hitch hike from Busan to Sokcho, and I'm wondering if its possible to do it on the main highways? I want to take the coast up to Ulsan and then Pohang and then Donghae. Is it possible to go to the edge of the city and get a ride?
Also, where in this country do you find road maps? I'm looking for one of Korea and no one has them. |

The main highways are toll-roads. Pedestrians are not permitted there. How many people do you think are going to stop and offer you a ride on the other roads?
You can buy an atlas at a bookstore. They're not expensive and some are even bilingual. |

If you don't mind a lot of walking in between the occasional ride you'll make it. I've never seen a hitchhiker in Korea but apparently it's not unheard of. The route is pretty straightforward, the 14, 31 and 7 are all pretty hospitable with lots of minbaks and cheap places to eat. |

A guy I know hitches all over the place.
Its novel here so there arent any regulations against it. Koreans are pretty generous about stopping but they might not understand just the thumbing gesture. The trick seems to be a clear sign with your next destination written in Hangeul.
Sounds like fun. I bet you'll meet some nice people. |

I've hitch hiked a few time here. It was kind of fun. The coast your talking about is really nice and there isn't an expressway there yet. It's pretty easy to get from Busan to Seokcho. One coastal highway all the way I think. |

Just spend $100 and buy a cheap bike. You can ride from town to town and won't have to depend on drivers. Pick up a cheap sleeping bag as it is perfect weather to sleep out under the stars. Don't forget bug spray and sun screen and drink a ton of water. |
