|
|
Hi
I just ordered an HP notebook from Amazon. As I'm not clued up on technology, I was focusing more on the type of processor and it was only after I ordered the notebook that a friend mentioned that Vista requires a lot of RAM. I will not use it for gaming or to run any graphics heavy applications, only for surfing, downloading and word pocessing. The notebook has an Intel Core 2Duo processor but only 1GB of RAM. Should I send it back and get a different model with 2GB of RAM?
Cheers in advance for any advice. |

No do not send it back, adding ram to a notebook is easy, depending on make and model simply buy an extra gig of ram and add it to the laptop.
more ram is better (upto ~3gigs with a 32bit system which is what you have) but is cheaper to do your self which is easy.
google laptop make and model + adding/installing ram |

Hi Demophobe,
The other model of notebook I was considering has 2MB RAM but an AMD Turion 64 x 2 processor. I posted a message last week and got some very helpful advice on whether to choose an AMD or a Pentium Dual Core for a notebook. In my case would it be better to sacrifice having a Pentium processor in order to get 2MB of RAM...or would I be better sticking to the HP with only 1MB RAM but Pentium Dual Core.
Cheers |

blackjack is correct. Just get some more RAM and put it in. Really easy. However, I am under the impression that you haven't ordered it yet?
I guess you got all the advice you need regarding the CPU, so there is no sense in going down that road again. Stick with your decision and order it with 2GB (if I am correct in thinking that you haven't bought the system yet). |

| How much would it cost to buy 1GB RAM? Is it really that easy to add to a notebook? It's just that I don't like the idea of opening up something thats brand new. How much would a vendor at Yongsan charge to do this? |

Hi Demophobe,
I've ordered but can send it back. The info I got regarding the AMD processor is that really the only difference there would be is how quickly it eats up the battery power compared to the Petium. Is that correct? |

Don't send it back...just get a gig when it arrives. As for going inside a new laptop, really, it is of no significance. A simple one screw door on the bottom...done all the time. Regarding cost, I am not sure. Have a look on Danawa.com .
Pentium and AMD make fine chips, both with varying levels of advantages and disadvantages. |

If you open it you might nullify the warranty.
If you do open it, try not to leave any marks on the screws etc. |

I ran Vista Ultimate with less than 1GB of RAM and probably an inferior video card so you should have no problems.
You can always attach a USB drive to boost the memory the cheap way (readyboost), or buy extra RAM if you got the money. |

Adding more RAM will not kill the warranty. If you are worried about it, take it to a licensed dealer and have them do it. |
