|
|
this afternoon I was on a bus on Jongno headed towards Kyobo bldg - we were stuck in traffic and next thing I knew surrounded by protestors - looking out the window I realized there were many - maybe most of them - were NOT Koreans - it looked like a variety of ethnicities -
they were carrying signs, of course, some were duplicative and printed in E stating "stop the crackdown" or something like that and then some K (which I don't read)
am just curious if anyone knows if this was about immigration/immigrant issues or what exactly? |

Most likely immigrant workers protesting against the crackdown on undocumented labourers. There was a full-page feature in the Herald today about it, along with an article on a priest who runs a workers' rights centre out of Garibong. Interesting stuff. |

So would that mean more jobs for Koreans? |

It would except that they do the jobs (DDD) that Koreans already refuse to do. |

And have been refusing to do since 1988, when the first tranche came over. Also, with its declining birth rate, Korea will need to either dramatically increase the number of babies being born (unlikely with such competitive pressures as education costs) or fully embrace immigration and start following most other developed nations down the multicultural path. That, or accept a shrinking of the economy and thus living standards. Any thoughts on the matter, Lekker? |
