Anyone else have these feelings when it comes to Korea and the Olympics (or any other major sporting event)?
I have enough of a heart that when I see a Korean fail and I feel really bad. You can tell it hurts em and that they tried really hard. For the individual, there is nothing but pity. Koreans as individuals can be great and this is why my heart goes out to some of these losing athletes.
But then they win something. And the announcers scream like 8 year old children. And the chants of "Dae-han-min-guk" go out. And the TV stations replay it 10 times an hour. And the "uri nara" starts. And the glorious "han" starts. And so many people tell you how great Korea is. Good god. If only they could learn the concept of "sportsmanship." |

There's one commentator on SBS who's particularly bad. Whenever he partners with another commentator, he ignores basically everything the other person says and just dominates the mic with extremely loud and obnoxious comments. And you can tell, all the while, that other commentator is a little peeved that they got their toes stepped on, having little room to speak or even provide their own input for the game. |

The announcers scream like "little girls" for pop-ups during baseball games. |

I'n thrilled to see then lose. First thing I do everyday at work is check the medal standings and watch Korea continue its slide slide down the list. They're now in 8th place. Japan is in 9th. Come on Japan. Korea's goal is to stay in the top ten. I hope they end up in 15th place or worse.
Korean nationalism makes me nauseous. |

Serioulsy. Me, too. "Modest" and "humble" are probably two of the last words I'd use to describe Koreans (and not just in regard to the Olympic games).
But, of course, I'm sure they would have some sort of rebuttal - "Yes, we are indeed quite modest! Our beloved forefathers struggled and worked very hard to provide us pure-blooded altruists opportunities to use our brilliance and to create an awe-inspiring economy which is the envy of countries all the world over! However, despite our sparkling rags-to-riches success story we simply refuse to brag about it because, in fact, we are indeed quite modest. Anyway, do you like kimchi? It's the best! But, you are a fat westerner and probably just eat hamburgers. Koreans, we are so healthy. We rarely eat.... etc. etc. etc. etc." |

Not likely. Taekwondo (and multiple associated medals) starts tomorrow. |

Nothing is worse than the World Cup. I found it almost unbearable in the last one. It was like every Korean I talked to said how great Korea was and they really believed they were the center of the universe. Thank God, I wasn't in Korea when they had that great run in 2002. For you longer-timers that were here then......it must have driven you nuts. |

Now, everyone can see that 2002's successes were solely because of Hiddink.
The Korean team hasn't even come close to that level since he left-and this year's Olympic soccer bust was yet another disappointment. |
