I have a wired internet connection with only one port. I'm wondering if there is some kind of splitter where I can just plug it into my cable and then have two cables coming out of it, one for the xbox and the other for the laptop.
Make sense?

you need a router. If you don't need wireless then they are pretty cheap. Any computer shop will sell them

that might be what I need. I'm clueless when it come to this, so I probably sound well out of depth! At the moment I have what looks like a router in my one room and a ethernet cable coming into my living room. The box only has one cable connection. I think if I changed this box (router?) to one that had two ports, all it would mean is having another wire running through the house into the living room. Ideally I would just like to split the connection in the living room so I have no need to run another ethernet cable through the house.

youre going to need a router no doubt about it.

If your not very tech minded then it could get tricky. Buy your router from a store, make sure you can take it back if u cant install it right. Maybe even your internet provider can change it for you....but probably for a fee...

You should be able to just change it with the old one.
But the potential for it not working by just plugging it in is there especially if the router needs to be configured in any way.

If you could get someone to install it youd save a lot of grief i think.

Sorry for hijcking the thread, but I have a router (airband 200Plus+), and two notebooks, one running Vista, the other not. I plugged in the router properly, but got only msn messenger working. Any website directs me to the megapass login screen. I tried tweaking the settings I felt most comfortable with, but to no avail.

Any helpful ideas?

I know my name/pw. I just don't have web access through the router. I figured it might have something to do with the firewall or a few changes I have to make to get the network to run properly.

You can get a simple 4 or 5 port hub for less than 15,000 won. I'm using a Winfast hub which has 5 ports out and works very well.

Router configuration is annoying. Get a Netgear switch.
