Other than looking up the sites of the universities in Korea, this is about the best one. Many of the jobs are not advertised, and go by word of mouth.
Do a search for all universities in Korea. Then check the English part of their websites one-by-one. |

Just go through each cities universities and email every single one with your resume. You may strike gold with a private if they are in need. |

I'm sure universities will be banging down your door to try to hire the person who can properly spell a whopping 50% of the words in this thread's title. |

Sly,
I would follow the advice of the two people who gave constructive comments and keep eye on the job board here on Dave's ESL. From my experience universities hire for March or September for the most part. There are some exceptions to this. The last job I had, I was hired to start in October (this particular university has 6 terms a year).
Most of the jobs for September are gone by now. If you can find somewhere else to work until then, you probably should plan on waiting until March (in which case you'd start applying around the beginning of the year). |

Excellent, Thanks...
I am under contract until the end of Feb., and then I plan on taking an tesol course in phuket...
So March really would be perfect. Thanks for the info...
Two more questions...
Is it probable to expect that I could get a uni job with a year of experience, and a tesol??? I don't wanna be barking up the wrong tree...
Also, I see your pic, do you know much about the absentee voter situation??? |

I think a lot of people will agree that to get a university job you should probably have a Master degree of some sort.
It can be done with just a regular BA, but I think it requires a lot more luck. |

University gigs pay the most in Korea and have the most vacation. Go check China's university jobs and see if the same applies. Try the exact opposite as far as salary goes. In China it's shocking how little the university jobs pay.
Another example:
Kindergarten jobs in Korea are everywhere but they don't pay you any more than the other jobs. Then go look at China and find out that Kindergarten jobs provide some of the top salaries at the private schools.
I have seen university jobs in Japan that pay a good amount but I'm not too familiar with that country's markets.
Some countries pay too little almost no matter how good your job is. I say that meaning the capability of sending home hard currency like USD or CAD or whatever you exchange your money into from these Asian currencies.
Your best bet is to figure out how much you want to send home each month, and then look at your options for doing that. I think you'll find university jobs aren't that easy to come by in any country if they are paying you a decent monthly salary.
Also, there are a lot of low-level university jobs that pop up on the job boards. They are outside Seoul and don't pay too much, but compared to other public school or Hagwon jobs they are comparable in salary, and offer less hours and sometimes a fair bit of vacation. I'm sure if you go for enough of those you can get into one with a BA.
OP, how much do you need to send home each month? |

I was definatley only expecting a low level university job. I mainly want more time off, I don't even care if it is unpaid... I just need closer to a month in december... and maybe in the summer as well. I only need to put around $400 usd into my account from home to make it work. But, it would be nice to save some more money. I know the mantra is that Hagwon's are terrible, but mine is actually great, despite almost 0 vacation time. I have seen some public shool jobs with more vacation, but it seems that university jobs have the most. I have also seen westgate on this site, but when I go to there website, it is unavailable. It looks like they place jobs for universities in Japan. I am really open to anything with more vacation, and near the same pay. Around $2000 a month... |

The competition for university jobs is pretty intense. I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I would say it will be difficult. You might want to try to aim at some of the schools in the southern part of the country. |

OP,
I didn't realize you were already working here. Okay, so that means you have "at least" one year of experience. I'm not sure if you have more than that.
There are TONS of university jobs on Dave's job listings that get scoffed at by a lot of teachers that consider those specific universities simply ripping off their employees. However, I've seen a lot of those jobs offering like 8 or 10 weeks vacation per year. Yes, you will have to do a summer and winter camp at some of them for your regular low monthly salary, but if you care about vacation time then take a serious look at the low-paying university jobs. I bet there are a lot around the 2.0 million won per month mark that don't look very stellar, but if you mainly care for the vacation then they would probably really make you happy. Also, I think you have a better shot at getting them since you're already in the country and have some experience, which would place you above a lot of the people from out of country that apply. I think a lot of people won't go for those jobs as often because from a salary standpoint they are among the weakest options available, and therefore a lot of people will go for public school and hagwon jobs. But that's just my opinion.
I say start networking with as many universities as you can, and start with the list on Dave's. Go back as far as you can and I bet you can pull 25 or 30 universities off the list that would suit your needs and you can start contacting now.
Good luck. |

Why on mother Earth would you want to actually get a TESOL now? Talk about a waste of perfectly good legal tender. You're already here and teaching. You've already blown a TESOL cert course away. You'd be slogging through the course with people who've never taught, so watching grass grow may be less boring. The course won't offer anything you don't already know.
Get a fake TESOL certificate from Koh San Road University in Bangkok or even from eBay if you want the extra 'ummph' that'll make you more competitive. Even universities here aren't going to call your TESOL outfit to confirm you actually completed the program. Being white, being from one of the big five countries, being young(er), and having a bachelor's degree (and a master's at the Uni) all trump a TESOL cert here. A TESOL will never top a master's or even a bachelor's. Buy a fake TESOL for twenty bucks and concentrate on getting what you really need to land the uni job. |
