What's law and what hagwons usually do are two seperate matters and there are plenty of schools that will give you 5-10 days off on top of public holidays and Saturdays. If it says the amount of vacation time you get in your contract check it out with current teachers first and see what actually entails. Is it just public holidays....? Is it days where the hagwon will be closed anyhow....? Is it vacation days that the school chooses for you....? That you get to choose....? Good luck.

If I remember correctly from what I've read of the Labor Standards act, the days worked and annual paid vacation are dealt with seperately. I don't think that Sundays and/or Saturdays are considered "Holiday" time. I really do think that we are entitled to a 2 week paid vacation every year. And I mean "Paid Vacation" in the 'western' sense of the word.

Actually, I think this whole idea that there is a 'western' and 'eastern' sense of what a 'paid vacation' is, is nonsense. We foreigners have just been subjected to too many shifty directors trying to come up with shifty excuses, so we've started to think that they have a different understanding of what vacation time is. The reality is that they're often using the cultural gap and communication barrier to manipulate the situation.

Hold out for something better. That's a crap offer.

Last year, I was told I got 2 weeks paid vacation (one fall, one spring) but actually only got 1 (fall). The spring one sort of just disappeared, but he let us go a week early on the contract.

This job, I have 2 weeks of vacation right now, and I am in the states at the moment.

my school only takes off two days per year Sad

but I only work 4 days, or 52 days off... the three day weekened makes it hard to complain, although the students whine a lot about showing up on x-mas, new years, etc.

Both of the hogwons I have worked at offered two weeks of vacation time and gave it. Nearly every job offer I see on the net offers 2 weeks. While some directors can be pricks about when they give it to you or if they actually give it to you, it seems like it's market standard for the hogwon industry to me.
