I guess the issue is dead.

Despite persistent questions about the ages of several members of the Chinese women's gymnastics team that won the gold medal, the International Olympic Committee said Friday there is still no proof anyone cheated and believes the controversy will be "put to rest."

Man, that is so sick and so wrong. What is even worse is the fact that the IOC STILL stands by that decision. What a joke.

why is there an age limit in the first place? seems like the optimum time to be a gymnast is like 10-16.

Because the intensive training takes a terrible toll on a young child's still-developing body.

yea but don't they anyway? i assumed that these guys have all been training since they are 3 or so..

The reason being, when you are that young (or younger), you are much more agile than those even a couple years older. Plus, they would not have had all the falls that those older would have had, thus they would tend to be more daring at what they do. Those become unfair advantages. If a rule is in place, it should be followed; teams breaking an age rule or doping should be held equally accountable.

As for proving her age, it may be difficult, but when a gymnast is missing a tooth, the age certainly does seem questionable.

With that said, the Chinese gymnast in question did marvelous routines; I hope she tries again in four years--there should be no question of her age then.

Yea but don't 20 year olds generally have an advantage against 40 year olds in the 100 m. Is there a lower age limit in other sports?

I'm more curious about China coming out and using her in 8 years, given that she will still be young enough.

Well, if it turns out the documents were falsified I don't really think she or any of the other underaged gymnasts should be allowed to compete in the Olympics again.

Seeing all of the controversies has really killed off my excitement over the Olympics.

Sadly there are controveries every year. Figure skating is one of the worst sports for it. Remember in Nagano when the French judge was caught being bribed by the Russian mafia.
