My girlfriend bought her computer at Yongsan, and I don't know if the copy of Windows XP (Korean) is legal or not. She is clueless about computers and has no idea.

A couple of days ago she tried to update and it asked for the CD or serial numbers. Not sure what because I wasn't there.

Anyway, no CDs to be found, and now there is an annoying message which pops up regularly. From what I can tell it asks for verification that it is a real copy.

How do I get rid of this? If I don't, will anything happen?

Sorry if this is a stupid newb question...

It should have a sticker on the machine somewhere.. The sticker will show the Key and state that its a genuine Microsoft software. If it doesn't then most likely its pirated.

Should look like something like this

youll have 30 days to put in a legit keym and it will check with MS if it is. If its not itll keep telling you 'you may be a victim of piracy" blah blah blah....either take it back, or download an anti-activation crack from the net

Thanks for the advice guys.

What happens when the 30 days runs out? Will my computer explode and destroy my place? Laughing

I think it will make you wait a while before you can login, atleast that's what happened when my machine got updated and figured out it wasn't legit. It may well lock her out from using the machine, i'm not too sure.

To be honest it looks like she's got a non-legit windows install. So she can either go back and winge, crack it yourself, or install a cracked one in English. I reccomend LastXP if you're going to reinstall.

In the software/computer accessory part of Yongsan (not the Gigabyte building but the building next to it downstairs) is a few sellers that sell legit OEM versions of XP for about 100,000 to 150,000 (Home or Pro). A few other places in Yongan sell OEM version as well but they can be harder to find.

Got mine there after my build, works great and is legit. Hacked versions always have problems especially as you can never update them properly.

id take it back to the shop.....most likely they advertised it as having XP so they hsould sort it out.
Most likely i think theyd just crack it for you. Even if they do youll be safe. Make sure if you take it back they install XP Service Pack 3 before the crack so you get all the newest updates and crack - which will allow you to still recieve updates.

Cracked versions of MS work just as well as the legit copies......
