I have an offer for a new job and my current boss agreed to give me a letter of release today. Then he said I should pay him 1,000,000 for it.

Can't I just go to immigration and cancel my visa myself?

I've been at this job almost 5 months. I gave notice but he wouldn't sign it. Everything was cool, but his new teacher didn't come yet. If I leave the country, my visa will automatically cancel, but can I re apply before the year is up?

Help!

Has anyone else pulled a runner and re applied since these new regulations took effect?

I need advice.

A friend of mine (who is also trying to change jobs) was told the following by a recruiter:

- With a letter of release, he could transfer his visa without having to leave Korea.

- Without a letter of release, getting a new visa is still possible if he takes a visa run to Japan.

Let me reiterate that this information is from a recruiter. Take it with a pound of salt.

Why not just finish your contract, then get a new job? As a matter of fact, when you apply for a good job, if you only had one year at the job before it can be a mark against you because it looks like the school did not like you enough to give you a second year. If you have a very bad job, a nightmare, stay for one year, if it is not so bad and they want to renew you, stay 2 years, then try for a much better job.

Why stay with an employer who is blackmailing you?

Shocked

The 1,000,000 W part was after the OP wanted to break the contract. He did not say if the job was bad or not. And, when one breaks a contract in, for exaample, USA, fines and penalties for doing so are not uncommon.

That seems an awful lot like putting in a full year in McDonalds so you can look good when applying to the shoe store. Waste of time!

Also canceling a visa is a huge pain in the ass. OP, you can't use a letter of release to get a new job without a visa run. You were only at your job five months, and you need to be there nine months. You need your boss to cancel your visa so your new employer can apply for a new one. I'm trying to get a public school to cancel mine now and it's been a lot harder than I think it has to be.

The school I am at cancelled an employees visa 2 weeks ago. Took about 35 minutes for the whole process, add another 15 for filling out the paperwork. The hardest part is getting the individualswho have their signatures on the contract into the immigration office at the same time. Immigration will only cancel if both signing parties are present.

I don't even know that my contract was signed by a person. The school needs to get a letter from the education office to cancel the visa. The education office is around three hours from the immigration office so I doubt anyone will come in person. I, however, have to travel three hours to be there in person. I asked if I could write a letter and got a giggle. So that's a no then? Sigh.

I left because I was sick of being verbally abused and lied to. He told me I could take my 4 weeks of vacation at the end of the year and I said that was unacceptable because i had already been working 5 months, and I had made plans. Those are a few of my complaints.

I went to immigration to cancel my visa and saw my boss. He made a complaint against me and told the official a bunch of lies and half truths.

He said I owed him money, but I don't think that is true. If it is, I will pay him.

I got an exit order and I will leave the country soon in hopes of re-applying.

Can anyone give me any advice in the event that he does attempt to sue me?
