I come from a traditional teaching experience, meaning that as a student, all of my life, my teachers taught like most teachers teach -- it wasn't meant to be a "fun/interactive" time in class.
So I often struggle with how to make things "fun", generally speaking though I like having fun in class and joking around.. keeping things light.
any general ideas on how to incorporate the "fun" element? (I can easily do it with some things, draw blank on others)
I'm drawing a blank on numbers. Any ideas?
I think they'll know 1-10, but beyond is hard for them. |

How old are the kids?
4-8 years old... How many pink monsters are there? How many boogers are in his nose? How many times do you have to hit the pinyata before it breaks?
middle/high school... How many zits does this guy have? How many boyfriends does she have? How many pushups can you do? How long can you hold your breath? |

hehehe.. yeah.. I thought of such stuff (though some of these are new/clever:) but that would mostly make things under 10.
but I was going to use your concept to review/cement the concepts.
I teach vocational/technical high schoolers (very low level) |

Youtube.... sesame street....
The "Count" had some that they would find funny rather than childish.
They try some physics/math stuff...
how many KM to the sun, how far is the moon, etc....
calculate a light year....
have them try to read off some really big numbers (millions, billions)
123,456,789 .... etc. laugh with them and keep it light... |

you tube has that 11, 12 pinball song from sesame street. Dont know how high schoolers would like it but my younger kids LOVE it.
just search "eleven twelve pinball" ..it will come up.
Maybe doing a simple scavenger hunt through the school at the end of the unit. How many fans are in the lunch room? How old is the principal? First one/team to finish gets a prize. |

Arithmetic!
Write (or find on the net) word problems with the answers in the range you are trying to teach, using words from the vocabulary you are teaching. "Count the number of letters in the word ____. Multiply that by the number of windows in this room. Write the answer on the whiteboard." |

We have all the Sesame street counting stuff on EFL Classroom - our A/V player. Downloadable so you don't need internet.

Another great way to count is to get them doing surveys of the classroom - How many ? First group to finish wins.
You might also do birthdays. Give a slip of paper to each student. They write down the month of their birthday. They stand and scour the classroom looking for a match. Is your birthday in ...? When they get a match they link arms and continue. When finished, they stand under the month label on the wall somewhere around the classroom. Then count how many people were born in X month. You can do this with almost any ? / task prompt, not just month of birthday...

I second this bad boy. Just teach 1-20 then play the 3,6,9 game. They'll love it. Also, if you have uno...& teach them the song "5 little monkeys." Or play "clusters" (they skip or walk around the room and you yell out a number and they have to make a group of that number. If they fail to make the cluster, they're out). Be creative! |

Hold up a handful of lollipops and have the students guess how many they think you have ... or alternatively, take photos of various candies, funny objects and show them on your big screen for only a few seconds (not long enough for them to count them all) .. and again, have them try to guess how many. |

Bugger, you just beat me to it. You could also implement some matching game from numbers. Match the numbers to the spelling of them. It should work into some interesting debates when you get them to do it in groups with large numbers (1.000, 3.000.000, etc). Younger kids would love colouring in those large numbers with black bold type and white in between. You could get them to put them all around the classroom with some blue-tack and then shout out a number and get the kids to run to the number. |
