I always just asked them, "How do you feel if a stranger told you that all Koreans were bad people? Now, how would you feel if you were Japanese and someone said you were a bad person? I guess this means you should go around saying Japanese are bad." |

As for the sea, there was another old name called chong-hae which means Blue Sea. I'm a fan of that name. I agree, East Sea is no good either. |

Denz -
An interesting argument, but useless.
Students will ignore it for many reasons, one of which is that 1945 isn't all that long ago. Emotions run high, and wounds are deep. Even still. Give them time.
Unfortunately, logic and emotion can't be divorced when it comes to discussion of these things. Using mathematics in class to "prove" that they shouldn't be angry does nothing except prove you're a smartass foreigner.
WWII was a long time ago, so what are those Jews complaining about? What, they want a memorial now? Give it up, people - it was in the past!
Everyone has to let go of the past their own way, and even tho today's generation may not have lived thru the occupation, I'm sure they've heard a lot of stories from their relatives, friends, and TV as to what it was like.

That must be the best compromise I've heard so far. Someone correct me if I am wrong but there is no "Blue Sea" anywhere on the Earth, is there? There's a Red Sea, and a Black Sea, and a Yellow Sea... but it seems strange that there is no Blue Sea now that you mention it. Of all the colours you'd think that'd be the most logical... |

For those that can read Korean, check out:

The bottom paragraph is where it brings up the idea of using the name cheong-hae. Also another one, nok-hae, which means Green Sea. |

Yeah, I like Blue Sea too. So what will we do with the Yellow Sea, which the Koreans are increasingly insisting must be labeled the "West Sea"?
Anyone who questions Korean delusions of their own significance need only look at how they've thrown international tantrums to rename two oceans on either side of it the "East Sea" and "West Sea", which would indicate for all time that Korea is the Center of the Universe. |

Yes I shoulder a bias: my wife is Korean and I've harboured a deep seated dislike of the 'monkey people', those ignominious little enanos called Japanese for many years now.
But there is more to it than that. I'm know history scholar and don't pretend to be, but, hell, set the historical backdrop a little. Have the Japs done things to provoke the Korean ire. The answer is a simple 'yes'.
Indeed, the little buggers are lucky to have slipped through the hands of international opinion. Take the Germans. Will they ever live down what happened during the War years. No.
They've apologized and been pardoned. Sure, the Jewish people hound them at each turn, for fear that in a world and time when we could easily look from one corner of the globe to another to see yet another 'holocaust', THE HOLOCAUST, their holocaust never been forgotten and its perpetrators never forget.
And the Japs. What the hell did they and do they continue to do. They are an arrogant and thieving nation; Koreans maybe proud and arrogant and, yes, much of it may stem from deeply rooted insecurity, but its overt, palpable.
What pisses me off more than brashness is the cloak of affected humility and obsequious manners Japs use to hide true contempt and scathing. The Japanese don't like Westerners. They insult us. 'White pigs', I believe, is their phrase of choice.
Yet will they admit it. *beep* no. Wow, wait could this be one reason the Koreans hate them so much. The only thing worse that destroying a nation under the guise of 'saving the East from the West' and then spending the next half century smearing truth and fact is fucking lying about it.
I don't preach violence, but part of being proud of one's nation is repelling those who, guilty of offense, don't even deign to ask forgiveness. No Japanese has a place in Korea.
Korea has so much to be proud off: a blossoming economy and growing international reputation. Oh yeah, and the women are a thousand times better than the short, stubby, bent legged 'kind' across the EAST SEA. |

Yes, liam, you are "know history scholar", for sure. It is your privilege to criticize Japan, past & present, of course. However, as one who's been called the poster child for political incorrectness, I have to say that I was stunned to read "Japs"(are you a descendant of Frank Capra or Curtis E. LeMay?), " ' monkey people ' ", etc. Don't imagine you'd be too thrilled to hear Koreans referred to as "gooks", eh? As someone who lived in the "arrogant and thieving nation" for 5 years, I was far more often put on a pedestal(undeservedly, I might add- a great similarity with Korea) than on the receiving end of " contempt and scathing".(I never knew "scathing" was a noun, BTW). |

one thing i felt about japanese people after believing i was in love with one for a number of years. no matter how much you try, and no much you attempt to blend in, and how much japanese you try to learn, you will never be accepted as an equal. there willl always be that "not truly one of us" barrier. it broke my heart to realize this, but ah well.
this is my personal theory on why i think there are many westerners with korean wives, but very few with japanese wives
as for the sea of whateverthehellitis, who gives. sea of japan sounds fine. Blue Sea would be a cool name, but whos life does it change?

Yea, I was about to say. His argument was silly enough without picking apart the grammar.
Anyways, I looked up "ilbon" in the Korean dictionary one time, and noticed that it said "Japanese". I also noticed that it said, with the same hanja, "dwarf"... |

Is "Japs" really so offensive? Aren't we being a little too sensitive and PC? It's no worse than Canucks, Yanks, Aussies Kiwis etc. surely, none of which bother me at all. Granted a lot of people use it derogatively but it's really just a short form and less fingerwork than typing Japanese. |

Are you serious? There are tons of Westerners with Japanese wives. They just don't tend to live in Korea.
FYI, there is a "not truly one of us" barrier for Westerners with Korean wives as well, so I don't really see your theory here. |
