Had any of those giant wasp-like things make their way into your classroom lately? You know the ones about an inch-and-a-half long with legs that trail behind them when they fly? They very much seem to like exploring human dwellings in Kangnam these days. Today I had a class were the students were just so good - the kind I'd like to videotape to brag to everyone who works in hagwon hell - when suddenly I hear 'Beol!' and all chaos broke loose. Two girls who are normally perfectly quiet and perfectly bahaved students screamed and jumped out of their desks and screams of terror followed the poor creature wherever he flew, as my students got to spend a minute of playing 'watch the waegook hero try to kill the most terrifying creature on earth'.
He's now mashed into the lockers on the side of the classroom. Seriously, though - all that fuss over a basically harmless creature. If he wanted to sting you he'd just do it and you'd be helpless; otherwise there's no point in panicking. |

| The wasps here are freaking ginormous. I saw this one that was dead floating on top of the water that was bigger than a mouse. |

| Those of us in the countryside could also tell stories of our spiders. I saw two yesterday high up between a lamppost and the awning of our building that were half-the size of my fist. But the size of the fly in its web was also impressive so perhaps it's not so bad....? |

I saw a couple on the way in to Seoul that were at least that big. They were big enough for me to see them on the side of the road from the bus. I wanted to ask the driver to stop so I could confirm that they were actually spiders, and not some other thing that hangs in midair between trees. |

Last week I went jogging and saw a spider's web that had been spun across a two-lane road between two trees high enough for traffic to pass underneath it. It must have been about twenty feet across in total. |

In Kyeongsangnamdo. I found one in my kitchen that looked like it belonged in a zoo terrariam. |

Probably eat them for 'stamina'. I saw an old guy on tv catching and eating them but the tv program portrayed him as a nutter. |

I've heard they're used in some medicines. My Korean friend said that I should use chopsticks to catch them alive, put them in a secure container, and take them to the medicine shop on market street and sell them. Personally I'd rather work a bit of OT if I wanted extra money myself. |

| In Hong Kong I once saw a cockroach that was at least three inches long and about two inches high. I was too afraid of it to kill it. Compared to that, the hysterics that Korean kids display when any insect is in the classroom just seem silly-or an excuse to break up the class. |
