I have a friend who came into Korea on August 21st and wants to get a tourist visa extension. Does this mean she'll get an additional 60 days added on or 90 days? I was a bit confused. Also is Omokgyo the best place or is there a location closer to Gangpyeon? I heard the penalties for overstaying a visa can be expensive. How strict are they in enforcing the fines if she stays 5 days extra? Any advice would be great!!!

your friend came on sept 21 last year??? i assume that visa was an e-2 work visa and you want to know about extending w/ a tourist visa?
usually they issue a two week extension and it costs around 30,000 won i think. the penalty for staying past your visa date can be costly so i don't recommend doing that. getting a short term extension is pretty easy from what i hear and not worth taking the chance should immigration enforce the monetary penalty of overstaying your visa. |

IF she is from the US AND she is on a 30 day visa waiver stamp she can go to ANY immigration office and extend it out to a TOTAL of 90 days by filling in an application and paying the visa fee (30kwon). She will need her passport.
They ARE ANAL about collecting the fine for an overstay (in addition to the delays at the airport when she tries to depart).
Get the extension.

I'd like to stay another 6 weeks after my contract is up, just as a tourist. Could I get a 60 day Tourist Visa coming off an e-2? |

Before your contract is up you can get up to one a month extension of your departure date.
Correct me if I'm wrong but to get a tourist visa you have to leave the country and come back. |

No. You can get up to 30 days as a tourist extension coming off an E2.
You can leave the country and return (even on the same/next flight-boat) and get a 30-180 day tourist stamp (depending on your nationality).
IF you are American, enter on your 30 day stamp and extend it to (a total of) 90 days by stopping into an immigration office, filling out the application and paying the 30k won fee.
