My visa finishes Oct. 22, 2008. This would be my first time requesting CRC for any reason. I would be requesting from New York or New Mexico, USA.

Would I need a CRC to extend my Visa, even if just for a few months?

I'm recently engaged to a Korean, in Gwangju (Jeollanamdo) and we are in process of getting a K-1 Visa to enter the US together and marry next year.

So this extension would be to continue working ata hakwon here while we await word from Immigration/ Dept of Homeland Security.

Anyways, if the CRC process is too much of a pain in the ass, then I'll just leave and come back as a tourist. ..a reverse Visa Run? Maybe goto to Tailand/Vietnam. Come back when we get an interview in Seoul.

YES.

1. Visa Extension Application
2. Passport and your Alien Registration Card
3. New contract
4. Sponsorship Certificate (from school)
5. A copy of Certificate of School / Business Registration (from school)
6. Processing Fee
7. New Criminal Record Certificate,
8. New Health Check Certificate

Even just for a few months. If you plan to work (legally), even just for a few days.

I work for SMOE and I extended my visa for a year without a criminal record check, it wasn't listed as something we needed.

You submitted one to SMOE when you signed on. You only need to submit it one time.

The OP has NOT submitted one yet and therefore has to meet that requirement.

Gracias for the information.

Does the Criminal Record Certificate process include what the sticky (Authenticating a Background Check) mentions? A trip to US embassy to submit an affidavit form?

Umm, ttompatz. Does this apply to EPIK too? I recently re-upped for another year in my province. My co-teacher called immigration in Daegu, and he said that they only required the new contract, my ARC, the fee, and something else. The something else I don't remember, but it specifically was not a new CRC and VSS. I didn't believe him at the time, but ttompatz, what you just wrote has me wondering if he was speaking the truth. (he doesnt always do so)
I was about to start the CRC and VSS process, but if I dont have to, it would save a headache or three.

A new CRC is not required when re-signing with EPIK.

Please note that for those who had their initial E2 visa issued by the Superintendent of GPOE, you may be exempted from providing the above two documents (medical and CBC). However this is at the discretion of the case officers at each Immigration Office.

Link here

It was also posted on the immigration website last spring but I can't find the link at the moment.

"※ Exempt : Native instructors invited by the Ministry of Education "

Ok....How do we know if we were invited....as opposed to not invited...and doesn't that beg the question, what does "invited" actually mean?

...and the next question of course is, "Do the people who weren't invited constitute party crashers?"

It comes down to how you got your visa.

If you received a letter of appointment which you presented to the Korean embassy/consulate to get your visa, you were invited by the Ministry of Education.

If you received a visa confirmation number and presented that to the embassy/consulate, you weren't invited (you were merely hired by the school principal or local school board) and you have to jump through the hoops.

Damn. It was two years ago, and I don't remember. I guess I'll just go to immi next week and ask what I need to present. I'm still a month away, so it shouldn't be trouble.

If you were hired from overseas through EPIK, GEPIK, or ETIS (English Teaching In Seoul, the SMOE version), you're likely an "invitee."

If you got your public school job from in-country by dealing directly with the local school board or principal, or through a recruiter with no mention of GEPIK, EPIK, etc., you're probably not an "invitee."

Hope this helps.
