Hi,
I am currently doing 41 hours a week in a kindergarten hagwon. However less than 30 of those hours are actually spent teaching. The rest is 'prep time.'

I was told that the work hours were 10-6 in an email which came with my contract, however I am basically fed up with the job and am not enjoying teaching at Kindergarten level. Therefore I would rather do less hours.

My contract states,

"he workday of the Employee starts on Monday and ends on Friday, 120 hours per month. Daily teaching hours are 6 hours per day. However working hours is flexible in accordance with the institutions schedule and in this case both parties must mutually agree."

Do I have the right to refuse to work more than 30 hours a week including prep time?

Thanks

Looks like your classroom hours would be 6 hours a day, without prep. Prep time will be on top of that, but I"m not sure the school can make you stay on site while you plan your classes.

You're teaching for 30 hours and putting in 11 hours of prep time.

So basically you are putting in 1 extra hour on top of your 10-6 contract that you signed. If you're planning to tell them you don't want to work that extra hour I think that's a little strange.

I think your main issue is that you don't like your job.

True, i don't like my job, and it annoys me when I meet other foreign teachers who work 30 houyrs a week, with no 'prep time.'

However there is nothing in my contract that says I have to work 10-6, its not actually written in the contract.

What do you actually do during 'prep time'?

My friend has to be at work for like 2 hours less than I do, but she has more teaching hours and harder classes. We can't decide whose job is actually better. No job is perfect.

Not much, write plans, make resources etc. However I spend a great deal of the time pretending to do work.

Obviousy I would rather not be there, and am frustrated with their ways of doing business, e.g. my pay is currently late.

Sorry to be a pest but can we revert to the original question as I want to go ahead with refusing to be in the school for more than 30 hours.

As I have said above, its not in my contract, however they want me to work 40hours. Does anyone have any advice, am I in the right? How should I go about this?

Why bother pretending to work?

When I worked at a hagwon like that we had to be at work at 9:30. Class was from 9:45 until 12:40 then 3:00 to 6:00. They told us that we had to be on site all day. We were supposed to only take 30 mintues for lunch. The rest of the time was "prep" time.

I never paid attention to lunch time. Sometimes I took 30 min sometime 2 hours. When I was in the office before class and between class, I read novels or played Playstation. Boss did not like it but what can he do?

Bump

I really need more advice on this, as I emailed my recruiter to point this out. She emailed back twisting the question, basically repeating the quote of the contract. I am now up to 30 hours a week, due to my employer adding phone calls to my schedule. I need to know if I am entitled to leave an hour earlier each day.

Thanks

If you are unhappy with your current school, then quit.

Leave, go destress yourself & return smarter & hopefully wider of the pitfalls of the world of hogwans.

Don't feel sorry for your school, they don't care at all for you. You are merely a tool to make money with.

^^^^^ what he said....
A) put up and shut up or
B) get out.

Pick one.

It isn't rocket science.

Hit the 6 month mark so you are not responsible for airfare (unless you signed a really bad contract),
buy a ticket to your favorite tropical beach place,
go to immigration and tell them you quit,
hand in your ARC,
get your exit order,
leave the country,
de-stress for a month

then

come back and get a new job (hopefully wiser than the 1st time).

Oh, and learn the magic word.... "NO". It works wonders.

.

There's the problem. You just described most EFL/ESL teachers' vision of hell. As a kindy teacher, you're nothing more than a baby-sitter. In my first job, I had to teach 3 40-minute kindy classes from 10am til midday. I hated EVERY second of it.

Get out after the six month mark, i.e. hand in your notice at the five month mark. Spend a month or so in SE Asia, search for jobs and get your docs together, then come back.
