[Fishead soup]

I just tried it the other day. It's awesome. It has a slight fizz and it's really crisp and refreshing. Much better than the slop in the plastic bottle.
I'm sure it stays fresher longer too. I actually like it better than Dong Dong Ju.

Hmm. I prefer it out of the bottle with some ice, in a pint glass. I don't like the fizz of the canned stuff. Also the canned stuff is factory-produced, whereas the botled stuff is often locally handcrafted. There are of course some makkoli factories producing it industrially in bottles, and this is the kind you find in the big supermarkets, but in your local shops you'll often find that the makkoli is is made by small local brewers.

Anyone ever had the corn makkoli? I heard about it from one of my korean teachers at Korea University but never actually saw it. Anyone have it; know where to find it?

Makkoli in a can? However good it might taste, the concept doesn't sound very appetising to me. It lacks the proper setting. Also, the quantity (assuming these cans aren't massive, like paint cans) is all wrong, for makkoli isn't meant to be consumed individually, but ladled out of a big ceramic jug by a group. A group seated around a rough-hewn, stupendously heavy, thickly lacquered, tree-trunk-like table. You're not supposed to just reach in the fridge and pop open a can of the stuff. That's blasphemy in anyone's book.

No. I'm decidedly against this development.


I'm also a bit surprised that so many of you whiteys like the stuff. I quite enjoy dongdongju and makkoli, but I rather assumed that was just sort my thang. I'm not best pleased to learn that I'm apparently a member of the common herd now.

Makkeolli or however the hell it's spelled is wicked good. About 2 years ago, a small shop at Seohyun in Bundang sold it as ice cream. Awesome stuff. Friend and I sat outside eating 2 family sized boxes of it.
