I recently got a new job whose details I'm not going to disclose right now. One of the other employees recently left on a visa run, and they have me sitting at his computer.
It didn't take me long before I discovered this computer had been used to access ESL Cafe in the past. I had no way of knowing who he was, only that he'd made a number of posts and PMs and looked at a lot of threads about visa runs (thankfully not about pulling a runner). All week my mind has been running overtime wondering which one of you I now work with. I only met the guy one day and he seemed nice. Could he be one of my many ESL Cafe enemies?
Anyway, I figured out a simple way to find his identity, and just solved the mystery. I don't think I can announce it until he knows though.
Oh, and to my undisclosed coworker, don't worry, I haven't been snooping around too much. Have a good trip and come back soon. |

Maybe the threads he looked at all had a common poster.
He would have to be logged or the user to have his name and password remembered to read pm's. He wouldn't have to start a thread, unless he wanted to wind up the other person which is just naughty. |

Even if the browser was set to remember the other users Login information, I still find it wrong to be reading his pm's. That's like reading someone's private letters they have sitting in their desk drawer while they are away. |

It is improper to invade someone's privacy and look at their PMs. I would not feel comfortable working with someone who did that. I wouldn't even want my own wife, if I were married, to go through my stuff. There is something called the right to privacy. |

If he'd read the PMs, he'd have no problem finding out who it was. Duh! He saw "Korean Job Discussion Forums :: Private Messaging" in the history. |

He didn't read the PMs, he just knew they were sent. The history file probably showed he went to his inbox but if RT clicked on the link he would have to enter his screenname and password.
Besides, if he had access to his posts and PMs he'd know who it was and there wouldn't be a mystery. |

100% absolutely right. I would NEVER read his PMs. If he was logged in still, I would've noted his username and logged him out.
His login information, password, and post content is not saved on this computer, only the URLs of pages he accessed. That means I could see whose profiles he visited and what threads he looked at because the URLs are saved on the computer. I also know that he sent PMs, but not to who or what he wrote.
Here, try this. This is the URL for my inbox. Click on it and see if you can read my messages. If you can, then my privacy has been invaded and I may have invaded his.
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/privmsg.php?folder=inbox
Here's how I found his identity. I went to the history entry that said "Post a reply." For example, the URL for "Post a reply" for this thread is:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/posting.php?mode=quote&p=1796870
It contains enough information to tell me which thread he posted in, but not which poster he is.
Anyway, if he doesn't find out before he gets back, I'm going to tell him over a couple beers my treat. |

RR never said he read any PMs just that posts and PMs had been made from that computer. |

By the way, there is possibility nobody's mentioned. Maybe my secret coworker is RACETRAITOR and he left himself logged in when he left.
If I know him as well as I think, he'd have a laugh over it. |

Ok I misunderstood. When you mentioned PM's I thought that meant you had actual access to them. I suppose your not evil after all. |

Oh yes, computers save user names and email addresses. When you go to the log in fields, the previous users info except their passwords come up with the auto form fill thing. You can type each letter one at a time to see what user names have been entered starting with that letter. Smart people turn off auto fill and delete cookies after each session. |

Read before you accuse.
RT starts a new job. He finds out the previous employee did a midnight run. He might be able to figure out why if he can figure out who the teacher was and from some of this posts on Dave. It seems to me a legit bit of detective work. Further the previous user used a public computer at his work place. There is no expectation of privacy. Zippo. |
