I'm looking at a job at Choonghoon public school in Gwanak. Anybody live in the area that can give me an idea of what its like?
Almost every post on here regarding Gwanak is about hiking up Gwanaksan, which leads me to believe this place is dullsville and is better for visiting on the weekend then residing in. I am a 24 year old male, I like to go out, I like to socialize. I lived in Ilsan for a year, and it was alriiight, but I felt like we spent most of our time traveling in and out of Seoul. If the hiring season for SMOE wasn't so far away, I would wait, but I need a job now.
Now, from what I've read it sounds like Anyang has a decent expat scene and night life. I think I can handle one subway stop away to meet other waygooks if I have to. But my question is, Do I have to?
If you live in Anyang or Gwanak, how often do you go into Seoul?
thanks in advance |

I thought Shillim was in Gwanak, but looking at the map I guess I'm wrong.
You can get a map of the area around the school here, in Korean: http://local.naver.com/siteview.nhn?code=11558495 Looks fairly in the middle of things.
Anyang seems all right, and seems like a decent place to live during the week. It looks like it has enough modern conveniences to keep you satisfied during the week. And, there's Gwanaksan! |

Gwanak mountain has Anyang on one side and Shillim-dong on the other. I hiked it once from Gwanyang-dong to Seoul National University area. Gwacheon also backs onto Gwanak mountain and is very close to(dont know if it technically a part of) Anyang City.
Anyang is a great place to work. Tons of work, and since it is a suburb, tons of privates. If you live near Gwanak-san in Anyang you are close to Line 4(light blue) and can get into Seoul pretty easily by train ot bus.
If it is Gwanak-gu, you will be in the Seoul National University(Shillim-dong) area. Not as exciting as the other uni areas of Seoul, but there will be a lot of English Speakers and you will be right on the green line, I think it is line 2. There will be more adult classes in this area and not as many hagwans due to there not being as many familys as you will have in the satellite city of Anyang.
I have lived in both areas, and liked Anyang a lot better. |
