I quite like John McCain in a lot of ways. Those ways mostly being that he's a maverick rebel type, rather than his party affiliation or VP choice. However I no longer think he is right in the mind.

Either he doesn't have a grasp of what's going on through ignorance, or he doesn't have a grasp of what's going on due to senile dementia or Alzheimers or something. I can't believe in his current position he'd willingly become so ignorant about so many issues (Economy, history of the current Iraq war etc.). As such my only conclusion is that he has some kind of medical condition which is impeding his thoughts and memories.

I may be wrong and maybe it's just his wacky maverick style. Or he's too busy and overworked to remember important stuff. If so, tell me.

Anyway, vote in my poll.

And please remember, this isn't a pro/anti McCain vote, but a vote on whether he is unfit due to dementia or some other medical cause: a Democrat who hates McCain but thinks he is of sound mind should vote "Yes". A Republican who loves McCain but thinks he's lost the plot should vote "No".

I personally think he has mid-stage Ronald Reagan disease. (Alzheimers). So I'm gonna vote "No".

There have been times I've thought he wanted the nomination in order to destroy his own party. I don't know why he would want to do this unless it was to force a realignment of the parties, but the idea doesn't hold up very well because he says he was not open to running as Kerry's VeeP in '04.

I haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe he has Alzheimer's.

I'm left with the opinion that he has made 2 stupendously bad calls--choosing Palin, then 'suspending' his campaign. I think he's just desperate and has made bad calls. In my opinion, in the process of making these calls, he has demonstrated that he does not deserve the presidency.

I put those 'calls' down to his maverick gambler style. He likes to take risks which might pay off, or they might not. He'd be a great guy to hustle at pool (or get hustled by).

What I'm more concerned about is the fact that he apparantely doesn't know what the hell is going on. The video posted in another thread showing his misunderstanding of Iraq conflict-chronology being a case in point. His whole 'thing' is Iraq. It's what he's based his arguments around for the last year or so. The fact that he doesn't know which order things happened strikes me as being a solid case for mental issues. I'm not a senator and I'm not basing an election campaign on the war in Iraq, but I apparantely have a better knowledge of the order of events than this guy. This means that he is either woefully uninformed, and thus unfit, or he's got mental issues, and thus unfit. I can't think of a better explanation.

To me it seems like McCain says something, then his 'handlers' re-advise him (correct him) and he switches what he said to something completely different. This is not a sign of a man too busy to keep track of things, but a man with mental issues.

Anyway, I've got a solid 4 years, whether he's elected or not, to find out whether I'm wrong =)
If he's not diagnosed with some kind of brain dysfunction or disease in the next 4 years I'll buy 2 beers for anyone who reads this. If you call me on it before it happens, you have to buy ME 2 beers. I'll be watching this thread come 2012 =)

He's sound of mind.

Its just that a Presidential campaign is extremely grueling, and McCain is only interested in a narrow band of issues.

Was it McCain who declared he had visited 57 states?

Haha. Did 'Iraq' leave his narrow band of issues? =)

I'm uninspired by him visiting only 57 states. He should really work on the other 43 the lazy barsteward. Plus that lazy guy has to make up for all that time he spent chilling in the Hilton in SE Asia instead of working, the bum. I reckon hangin' in the Hilton is almost the same as draft dodging. I stayed in a Hilton once and it was LOVELY, really nice. This guy is as bad as W.

Well on the subject of his suspending his campaign, many have pointed out that given he has a VP nominee and has said he has 100% confidence in her, one would think the answer would have been to put her out there for a week on her own. There really is no reason not to say for a week have him go back to work and her on the road. It not only shows his confidence in her to lead, but allows him to say he's doing the people's work. My guess is, they would have scored big in the polls if they had done that.

He's not demented, he's deluded.

His delusion evolves around the only thing Republicans are ever interested in, money and protecting their cushy way of life. Any normal human tendency to care about the welfare of others goes out the window when their wealth is threatened in any way.

I don't think either of these guys are voting for him. But they are doctors and giving an unbiased opinion.

John McCain appears to have ADHD, and probably always has had.

He seems incapable of maintaining a steady focus on things, preferring to go for sudden outbursts of interest, that soon wane.

Quote:
....The only other mention of yesterday's debate came when McCain hit Obama over his record on earmarks, but McCain made an interesting slip of the tongue before he got to the biggest charge.

"You and I together will confront the ten trillion dollar debt that the federal government has run up and balance the federal budget by the end of my term in office," McCain began, making his way to pork barrel spending. "Across this country this is the agenda I have set before my fellow prisoners and the same standards of clarity and candor must now be applied to my opponent."

Presumably McCain meant to say 'Americans' not "prisoners," but he didn't catch his mistake and powered on to criticize Obama for avoiding the tough questions in this campaign.

This guy is aging right before our eyes. He looks at least five years older than when he began this campaign. Think what he would look like in four or eight years.

This is what I am getting at on the thread where people are protesting that they do not construct J. McCain as the villain, they merely disagree with him, etc. Note that here he appears as "deluded" and, by implication, "abnormal" in an entire class of deluded and abnormal people -- classic demonization-via-mental-illness-strategies.

Blaming some of McCain's weird gaffs on senility is actually putting it kindly:

But it is probably a contributing factor.
