Korea University's Jochiwon campus offers very attractive terms. 16 hours a week for about 3.5 a month, plus a few hours overtime should bring you in about 3.8. I know several people there and the work environment is quite relaxed. People often stay there for years, though they are changing the rules to a two year maximum for foreign professors. In addition to salary, they offer hefty hourly rates if you choose to work a month in the summer and winter. (I think it's optional) If you do, you will still have three months vacation. You definitely need a masters - they only sponsor E-1, I believe. You can save 30,000,000 won a year without too much trouble. They are hiring now:

The downside? Errr....Jochiwon is not exactly the nightlife capital of Asia. Umm...the hiking is great, though Rolling Eyes

So there are shite jobs, good jobs and great jobs at universities here.

I've seen some great ones (read - shite), no housing, no air fare, no bonus, 20 hours a week, 2 weeks vacation, 1.9 mil.

Some really good ones, 300,000 housing allowance, no air fare, no bonus, but 15 hours a week, 5 months vacation, office, 2.5 mil

Then there are those great ones, 3.6 mil, 9-12 hours per week, 5 months paid vacation. Master's degree 100% needed.

The question is, how hard is it to get these jobs? And what degree do people who actually work there have?

That's pretty good. Better than Hongdae in Jochiwon. Only 3.1 but you can have only a BA. I think Hongdae is 2.9 in Seoul though....not bad.

Most teachers at my uni make between 3-4 mill a month (with some overtime during the semester and camps during the breaks), complete with the free housing and 5 months vacation and all that. We are definitely out in the sticks though.

How to get the good job? Network! Go to Kotesol, make a wide variety of friends apart from your hagwon coworkers Smile They will probably not be able to help you find the sweet job in your second year. Get a Masters, in almost anything, but ESL related preferably. Put together a crazy impressive application package and scour the job sites compulsively.

thanks for the tip. I'm finishing my masters, have loads of experience (at home, in other countries and at universities here), have a pretty good resume....just need to find who pays and who's hiring. Some schools post on Dave's, some post on their own websites...like Hongdae....but with so many schools in the country it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Sometimes I use this site

http://univ.cc/search.php?dom=kr&key=&start=1

or this one

http://www.arwu.org/

but this is time consuming and has never gotten much results. I wanted to find a good paying job in Chuncheon, looked up the universities there, contacted them......only one of them actually got back to me. They said watch Dave's...at least I know what kind of job I can get there and where their job will be posted....but a hell of a lot of work for only one quality hit.

so what sites do you use? So far Dave's seems to number top...

SNU? Since WHEN? They USED to pay that, but then they gutted the program and lowered the pay along with their standards. Now the pay is 2.5 with no raises over the course of the three years they let you be there before you get the boot.

I had a LOT of friends in the department there, and they ALL left for greener pastures.

this years add on Dave's.

Could you please provide a link to that ad, I was only able to find the following one: Non-tenure-track full-time lecturer, College English Program, Seoul National University.

It would be nice if it was true, but it is not true. At least not for M.A. or B.A. holders. Ph.D's, I don't know.

My mistake, SNU is only 2.7....not bad, but a little low for only masters applicants. I ment Korea U, here

There are a few more....

I've NEVER heard of a uni job that pays that much for 9-12 hours a week.

I have.

The tenure track positions all do (usually 6 hours a week), but there aren't a whole lot of those.

Some of the non-tenure track EFL positions do, although the ones I know don't start out that high, after a couple or three years of raises, they get there.

A friend of mine is tenure track.

As far as hitting 3.5 at my current rate of pay increase and my starting salary I won't be hitting those 3.5 g monthly bank statements in 3 years. I have what I would consider to be a pretty good job.

mind sharing said uni names?

I only know a few that offer 3 mil plus for non tenure track. Most already mentioned here.

My question is, do the non tenure track universities that pay that much strictly require a masters degree? (Hongdae doesn't appear to)

And for those Universities that only accept Masters degrees and who pay well, are they strict about only hiring degrees in English.

And of course...how do you get to a real position or tenure position?

I work for a good school that required a masters degree....or so they said. With a little experience and a few good references, as well as a little luck I think just about anyone here can get a quality job with any bachelors degree. To get a reasonable job, watch Dave's every September and October, and March and April, check the news papers, learn about the ranking of schools here and learn what schools pay and which ones don't. Email them, ask people, watch for ads or do searches for old ads. If you just want to be lucky....know people who work at Universities and hope that something happens and their school is in a bind and needs to hire at the last minute. My school has hired 3 teachers last minute in the last 3 years due to people quitting, changing their minds about accepting a position or even having deaths in the family...sucks to profit from someone else misfortune, but it happens. I've set up 2 of my friends at my school and I know a few others who have done the same.

I'm not a huge fan of either WorknPlay or English Spectrum...they are good for private work but have yet to see a university posting.

The only other way I've been able to find good jobs has been to make contacts with people who work at universities....but normaly who want so have some leech who anly talks to you in the hopes of scoring a uni job....I only give tips to friends. or to contact schools directly...again like looking for needle in a haystack. Only a few schools have actuallt taken the time to write back to me.

Now I'm married and a little tied here....so I'm looking to make the most of things here and move into those jobs that are really good, not just good.

So details would be appreciated.

I've heard it's more like 3.1 and you are on your own for housing. They might help you out with key money, though I am not sure. Hongik (or Hongdae) has a two year contract which can be renewed at least once. Generally, the folks there are pretty happy but they have to improve their housing situation, I hear. And yea, they have the 12 hour thing which is definitely nice.

Also, I hear you can schedule your classes in a 3-4 day work week at Hongik, which is nice, and commute from a nearby city without too much trouble. Maybe that works well for an f visaholder who has other gigs.

I know from a very reliable source that they make more than 3.5 a month and MA's make more than that, I think just over 3.6 or 3.7. They also all work 3 day work weeks.

Here's their last ad.

http://applicant.hongik.ac.kr/field/field_main4.htm

Keep in mind, the numbers posted in the ad don't include housing and in Jochiwon you will most likely need key money, on top of rent. Lots of folks commute from Daejeon and other nearby cities. Perhaps your reliable source was including OT in their numbers, or they have been there for awhile.

For the new recruit, the numbers I gave were correct.

Don't get me wrong, though, Hongik Jochiown is a great school to land a job in and is worth serious consideration for anybody -- particlarly if you can schedule your classes in three or four days. That ad says it's four days on campus mandatory but I think you might be able to do it in three.

The higher the pay, the higher the desired qualifications. Konkuk, Ewha, Yonsei, and Korea U. in Seoul all pay well above 3.0, but housing is not included. Still, they pay better than most. Korea U. positions, however, ask for a LOT of contact and office hours. Not worth it, but a good resume pumper.

Tenure track positions are competitve. You generally need to have a Ph.D. in the dicipline, to have published in rated international journals (a lot the ESL journals don't make the grade), and you should have a very tight and progressive research agenda.

There are jobs out there. The way to move up in academia is, and this won't come as a shock, to get higher degrees and get more active in your dicipline. There will always be crap university jobs available to those with less than stellar qualifications, and there will always be people lining up to make 2.3 million a month as long as they get their long vacations.
