I have a friend from Japan, here on an E-2, teaching Japanese at a small university. She's being told, by her employer, that she doesn't need a background check or medical check. Japanese Embassy says she does need the background check. Any ideas why she would be exempt from the med. check? NOT a native speaker? Not teaching English?
Assumed if you had an E-2 ALL requirements applied. Thanks for your responses!

2 possibilities:

a) she is not working on an E2 (in spite of what you have been told)

b) your employer is sadly mistaken and there will be a rude awakening in the near future. - I suggest you / her check with immigration for a more definite answer and/or be prepared for the inevitable come renewal time.

Card says "E-2" plain as day.

Have your Japanese friend post E-2 guidelines for Japanese people working in Korea in Japanese as it appears on the Japanese embassy site. I'll look at it. Or ask your friend to give the address where these guidelines are. There is no use speculating on what Japanese do or don't do based on what English speaking countries are bound by.

Good point!

I will. She has gone to a lot of trouble based on my "help."
I was giving advice based on the "E-2" on her card.......and, also because, when I was at Immigration renewing my Visa, I asked about her...the reply was "E-2 is E-2."

I'm officially out of the Immigration-advice business....so, naturally I turned to you guys at Dave's. Thanks.

In that case, E2 is E2... get her documents in order, the employer is mistaken and there will be a surprise come renewal time.

I used to think this way. Now if I find myself at a dead end, if I find my ass on the line, I won't even bother to come here asking what to do. I have been weaned and now know better.

Ten people. Ten different opinions. No straight answers. Typical.

I sort of agree. I would use this forum as what to expect from Kimmi, but if you need to know the real scoop, it is always better to call your local immigration office and speak to a few people. Many times they will also give you 3 or 4 different answers till you actually go there in person.

In December 2005 all the English E-2s in Kyunggi-do had to march down to the immigration to sign some nonsense about having diplomas checked. The Chinese and Japanese teachers at our school didn't have to.

I thought that kinda sucked.

The Japanese, Chinese and German teachers at my uni had to go. They rented a bus and took us all down to Immigration together. Everyone on an E2.

That's cool. At my high school we were just told, "go". There was one haggard looking gal in the Suwon immi and a line of waeguks.
