I brought back a really good rack-mountable dolby cassette deck (western plug) and a whole shitload of old cassette recordings I want rendered to mp3 for a website I'm making. They'd only be for the internet of course, so I don't know how that might affect quality. The goal is a website archive of mp3 recordings showing earlier live performances of my stuff from several years. A lot of it was just live acoustic concerts put on two track tapes but with a basic 4-channel mixer.

What's the best way to do that? I tried to talk to a guy back at Musicstop in Halifax about it, but he basically ran the idea into the ground, suggesting there was no way to get anything but the shittiest of results. I personally think the salesman was full of crap. I don't think a studio technician would consider them CD material in terms of recording quality, but they are certainly good enough to enjoy and listen to a few times.
And I don't understand how a salesman couldn't take a bad idea and work it so it was better with a possible sale.

Anyway, I think I can get some good renditions because the cassette recordings themselves, while old now, are originally high-quality, e.g. chrome metal tapes, some mixing involved, etc. I just don't know how to get started and what is a reasonable digital resolution goal to attain.

RCA jack out, 1/4 inch adaptor into my computer line-in or mic with a freebie mp3 recorder with some basic mixing tools?

Constructive replies only, please, thanks.

I had some cassettes that I made into mp3s. I downloaded Audacity and the results were satisfactory for me.

The results wont be good, but could be ok.

It is probably worth cleaning the heads of your tape deck first.

Sometimes you may get some problems caused by having both the computer and the tape deck plugged into the same power source.

Give it a go. See what you think when you do it. I mean, if you use an opensource recorder like Audacity, your only cost will be a couple of thousand won for a male/male cable to connect the deck with your computer.

Well, that and a little time.

That works and I've done it (I use Audacity to record it on the computer). But, if you have a whole shitload get get a PlusDeck.
