... and possibly to a lesser degree Korean-Canadians.

I'm interested in perhaps meeting up with and hanging out with some other 'gyopos' (as I'm understood we're called here). Hanging out with my American (read: non-Asian) roommates has been fun... but I'm interested in going out with people who I can relate to at a more 'culturo-genetic' level.

I want to improve my Korean while being able to crack jokes in English that I don't have to explain. I want to go to exotic places without drawing stares. Eat stuff that Koreans eat, go places Koreans go, do things Koreans do and perhaps even blend in.

I don't really care exactly what we do as long as there is lots of chigae and Gostop involved.

Let me know what's up. You can PM me here or email me at jason.whang at gmail dot com.

You might have better luck on Facebook. Your post will probably draw out some of the anti-gyopo freaks on here.

You got good gyopos and bad gyopos.

The good ones blend in and don't cause a scene. The bad ones always seem to find trouble (or trouble finds them).

My advice to the OP, choose your friends wisely.

In my extensive experience with gyopos both in Korea and the U.S., the ones from L.A. are by far the worst.

In my experience, they like to unwittingly talk shit about other groups of Koreans, in English, not realising that they are also Gyopos, and then get into fights outside of McDonalds Apujeong. "I heard what you said dooooooog. Step outside dooooooooog!"

hah, i suppose the only thing worse than a korean person in america who wished they had never come is a korean person in korea who hated america enough to come back. having been part of the korean american community my whole life i feel pretty confident in my ability to spot the 'good' and 'bad' gyopos.

all my experiences with native koreans have mostly been with people who are much older than me, people i have a hard time connecting with. all the foreigners i know, i know through my roommates and besides feeling like a second class citizen around them (i partially feel because i'm not white, something about me having an 'easier' time here) all they seem to go do is go out late, drink themselves silly, and sleep in parks till the train service returns in the morning - not exactly my idea of a good time.

i'm currently taking daily taekkyon classes and ride with a group of bicycle commuters in the guri/namyangju area twice a week

In my opinion, looking for friends through this method is inviting potential trouble and shysters.

Friendship is a myth perpetrated by Greek philosophers. Avoid the drunks their idea of the friendship myth is quite distorted. Good luck in your search.

i figured there's got to be at least a couple people who feel the way i do. not sure how else to go about it other than wearing a tshirt that says "i speak english, be my friend" as we tend to blend into the background noise.

Yeah, this is the wrong board for this. Especially for gyopos, because there is a strong, virulent anti-korea faction here, which occasionally brings out the lone stand-up-for-korea gyopo guy (or somebody pretending to be), which sets off a storm of insults from the anti-korean people, which causes the korean guy to say that english teachers are losers who can't get jobs back home, which sets off a bigger storm involving everybody else, and then in the end, the pro and anti-korean factions all have a race to see who can say the outlandish bullsh*t.

Try facebook. There are groups for just this thing.

I dunno seems a bit exaggerated. It's a board for people who teach English, and live in Korea. I wouldn't say it's the wrong board, though other methods could be more effective.

Even if there was a "strong, virulent anti-korea faction" here, they should at the very least be able to tolerate this man's (or woman's) post. After all, it is a forum about KOREA, and not a board only for the so-called "anti-korea faction". Last time i checked there wasn't a "Gyopo stay out!" sign on ESL cafe.

If the guy wants to try looking for fellow gyopos on this site, theres no harm in it, people who are disinterested in his topic can simply disregard his thread.

Start a new thread and title it. Anyone in TALK?

The talk program is new and nearly completely made up of gyopos(is that correct pluralization?)

Alternatively look for it's members on facebook or other networking sites.

i feel like i'm in some kind of no man's land: i'm a gyopo, from the midwest, raised by a korean family, got a degree in art, couldn't get a job, and am teaching english on an e-2 via gepik.
