I understand we have some social workers / counsellors now EFL'ers here on this site, so I thought I'd throw these quesitons about "Narcissism" out here on the board and see if they, or anyone else, had anything to say.
I'm curious if anyone here can comment on Narcissists. First, what exactly is the difference between "Narcissism" and "Ego Mania"? Based on the little reading I've done off Google, the Ego Maniac and Narcissist share the same characteristics. I observe a lot of lying - (about anything - even small crap) from this person and s/he constantly strives for attention for something they did or said for adoration, admiration, adulation from others. Come to think of it, the person I'm thinking of doesn't really engage in normal conversatoin like most people, but constantly makes predictions, demosntrates their knowledge with facts and lectures and tries to come across as the educator.
I'm also interested in knowing if narcissists are actually capable of knowing about thier condition/pathology? Do these people realize that they lie compulsively, treat people like objects and generally don't give a shit about anyone except themselves? I'm beginning to suspect that I know a narcissist. Interestly, this person has actually mentioned that both of parents are narcissistic.
By the sounds of it, it's not a good idea to get involved with such people. |

I would say they are painfully aware of their condition and behavior. It generally masks insecurity. |

no, no - not a girl I'm dating! Really!
Just someone I've been observing and talking to in a professional context. Yeah, as you read some of the lit. on it, which I've been doing tonight, these people seem to ironically suffer from feelings of low self-worth. So the arrogance, lying and spewing of facts, knowlege, etc., is actually just to feed their ego; make them feel good. It's an interesting disorder.
Anyone here ever dealt with a narcissist? What did you learn about these people? |

Ego-mania seems to involve excessive preoccupation (mere preocupation) with the self, whereas narcissism seems to mean fascination, self-love, and actually the original meaning is being in love with one's own reflection.
So, an example: All Bob ever thinks about is himself, he's the most selfish person in the world, but he has very low self-esteem, detests his appearance and has a lot of self-hatred. He's an egomaniac, but not a narcissist.
Jane, by contrast, is completely in love with own reflection and actually is sexually-aroused by herself. However, she's quite altruistic and always seems to think of others' needs before her own. Unlikely I know, but anyway, this example reveals Jane to be a narcissist but not an egomaniac and hopefully shows what appears to be difference between narcissism and egomania.
Cant say I'm satisfied with my definition there, but I felt I'd give it a shot. |

Isn't Korea, in general, like that? |

In the case of Western women, almost all of whom behave as described, they really don't seem to consciously appreciate how awful they are. However, they presumably have some subconscious inkling of it, given their increasing predilection for prescription drugs, therapy BS, self mutilation of various kinds etc. |

yep, have met a couple... i generally use a simpler phrase to describe them passed onto me by exgf's irish mother, "they're up their own azzes"... she also used to fancy saying, "they think they're hot sh*t, but they're just cold diarrhea"...
i've also found that they can be quite manipulative in their dealings with others... almost to the point of trying to make some one else sabotage themselves... is there anything saying that this is an aspect of narcissism...
i think the low self-esteem thing rings true as well... often, substance abuse accompanies this condition as i've seen it... |
