OK. After reviewing every mind numbing post on this thread I have yet come up with a single bit of 'data'. A lot of theory, hypothesis, dire predictions about the future, and Mencken quotes, but no 'data'. Why should I have to don the lab jacket and start crunching numbers to defend myself? However, in the spirit of fairness, I will offer you my own theory on the cause of global warming - the sun.

Didn't read the thread, but why the hate towards Mencken. He would absolutely be a global warming skeptic.

No real hate for Mencken but rather a loathing for solipsistic Mencken quotes. Plus my general theory that all global warming theorists, practitioners of martial arts, and Mencken quoters are asexual and therefore only worthy of contempt. And yes I don't know what solipsistic means but it sounds good so what the hell.

I forgot and had to look that one up. It's been a long time since my SATs.

I find it breathtaking, the arrogance of those who know better than the scientists. I suppose they already warmed up by denying evolution.

What makes you think you know better than the scientists?

Ah yes. I see your "the sun", and offer my opinion on evolution - monkeys.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded that global warming is most likely due to man.

The onus is on the message board contrarian to provide data in the face of so much christio being in agreement. I could come up with some kind of Latin phrase for that, but it'd come off as rather pretentious.

You want facts, here's some facts.

Arctic ice melt not quite a record this summer

Jane Kay, Chronicle Environment Writer

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

(09-16) 18:32 PDT --

As the Arctic summer comes to an end, scientists have determined that the sea ice has shrunk to the second-smallest size on record, continuing the disturbing trend associated with a warming planet.

The official word came Tuesday from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., which monitors the daily updates of NASA's satellite images. The pack ice reached its smallest size of the year Friday and has begun to re-form with the cooling advance of autumn, the scientists said.

Sea ice is important because it affects the workings of the world's climate by regulating exchanges of heat, moisture and salinity in the polar oceans. When the ice melts, it exposes open water that absorbs solar energy. The warm ocean waters then favor further sea ice melt.

This year, the sea ice was measured at 1.74 million square miles, the second-smallest size since NASA started reporting satellite data in 1979. That compares to last summer's record low of 1.59 million square miles.

Summer of 2008 measurements fell 33 percent below the 22-year average from 1979-2000, which is used for baseline comparison. Summer of 2007 pack ice was 39 percent below the average.

Yet there may not be much more sea ice this year than last year: The floating ice may just be spread over a larger area, said Walt Meier, senior researcher at the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

"This year, compared to last year, it looks as though there are more broken floes with water between them, at least in certain areas. Last year there was a more solid ice pack of one connected sheet," said Meier. Ice floes are consolidated blocks of ice.

"The disconnected ice floes are potentially more vulnerable, indicating a weaker and more dispersed ice pack," Meier said.

The pack ice loss, first in the Beaufort Sea off the coast of Alaska and then shifting to the Chukchi and East Siberian seas, was linked to a shift in atmospheric circulation. Air temperatures in the Chukchi Sea were 9 to 13 degrees higher than normal this year.

University of Washington scientists found that sea surface temperatures for August corresponded with areas of ice retreat.

The consensus of most sea-ice scientists is that the Arctic could be free of ice in the summer between 2030 and 2040.

"On the other hand, the last couple of years have been really low. If the sea ice keeps dropping, it could happen sooner," said Meier. The 2008 sea-ice size "reinforces that sooner or later we're going to get to an ice-free state."

Just six years ago, when the summer of 2002 sea ice declined to 2.2 million square miles, scientists who predicted an ice-free summer "would have gotten laughed out of the room. It seemed impossible. Now, no one is laughing," Meier said.

A lot will depend on natural variations that occur even in a warming climate, he said.

In Kaktovik, a village on Barter Island off the northern coast of Alaska, residents can see the changes for themselves.

"We don't have ice out there - it's open water," Marie Rexford said recently.

"We know there's no ice. When we look out, we see nothing."

In Yosemite, Scientists Find Species Movin' On Up

by Dan Charles

All Things Considered, October 9, 2008 Scientists have retraced the century-old steps of legendary naturalist Joseph Grinnell through Yosemite National Park. They found that most species have moved to higher, cooler elevations. Their study is published in this week's issue of the journal Science.
