http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/10/palin.investigation/index.html

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) -- Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska's governor and violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator's report concluded Friday....

Does this surprise anyone? Do we need another four years of people like Bush and Cheeny who believe rules and ethics are for everyone else?

This is really frightening:
http://www.freep.com/article/20081010/NEWS15/81010092

"The investigation revealed that Palin's husband, Todd, has extraordinary access to the governor's office and her closest advisers. He used that access to try to get trooper Mike Wooten fired, the report found."

If McCain and Palin are elected are we going to have a guy that used to sell snowmobiles (Palin's husband) running around Washington trying to settle his own personal grievances because his wife is the Vice President and he can?

Who is taking these people seriously?

Nancy Reagan's astrologist ran around the White House influencing decisions.

That in itself is not a big issue. Few votes will ride on it.

"If McCain and Palin are elected...?"

Join Me: are you truly going to spend time hammering away at discrediting the Republican ticket, now, in the fourth quarter, when you have them by two touchdowns and a field goal?

Are you paying attn to what is going on among the grass-roots conservative base? And you -- and CNN, too -- keep hammering away hard at S. Palin, a woman they love? How do you expect them to treat your man after January 2009?

You do not care, do you?

Join Me: first, you have that in the wrong order; but the left has had it in that order since late-August. In any case, are you truly going to spend time hammering away at discrediting the Republican ticket now, in the fourth quarter, when you have them by the equivalent of two touchdowns and a field goal?

Are you paying attn to what is going on among the grass-roots conservative base? And you -- and CNN, too -- keep hammering away hard at S. Palin, a woman they love? How do you expect them to treat your man after January 2009?

Are you paying attention to the economy? My 89 year old grandfather (Republican) just lost 20% or his wealth and is very unhappy about this. He says he is voting for Obama. You are right...there is a grass roots movement building but I don't think is is evolving the way you think it is. Rolling Eyes

Do you refer to the hysterics and extreme right-wing rhetoric?
Quote:

Not about the financial crisis

The crisis isnt the only scary thing going on. Something very ugly is taking shape on the political scene: as McCains chances fade, the crowds at his rallies are, by all accounts, increasingly gripped by insane rage. Its not just a mob phenomenon its visible in the right-wing media, and to some extent in the speeches of McCain and Palin.

Weve seen this before. One thing that has been sort of written out of the mainstream history of politics is the sheer insanity of the attacks on the Clintons they were drug smugglers, they murdered Vince Foster (and lots of other people), they were in league with foreign powers. And this stuff didnt just show up in fringe publications it was discussed in Congress, given props by the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, and so on.

What it came down to was that a significant fraction of the American population, backed by a lot of money and political influence, simply does not consider government by liberals (even very moderate liberals) legitimate. Ronald Reagan was supposed to have settled that once and for all.

What happens when Obama is elected? It will be even worse than it was in the Clinton years. For sure there will be crazy accusations, and I wouldnt be surprised to see some violence.

The next few years are going to be very, very tough.

I assume you agree with the tone though maybe not the specifics of what Krugman is getting at, Gopher?

His prediction agrees with mine. Too bad you seem to remain blind to the left's antagonistic self-righteousness and hysterics, and how these, too, are fanning the flames, Mises. If this extreme polarization keeps going as it is, it will not end well.

Here is another spin, besides CNN's pro-Obama/anti-McCain spin, on the story (and I am not sure I see the big deal Democrats are making of it)...

Quote:
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Sarah Palin "abused her power" as governor in the disciplinary case against a state trooper, according to a legislative panel's report released Friday, though it also found that her firing of a state commissioner was "proper and lawful."

The ethics inquiry, which Palin's supporters have called politically motivated, found that a family grudge was a factor in Palin's dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan -- but not the sole factor. The report says Palin failed to keep her husband from meddling in the discipline of the state trooper, her brother-in-law, following a contentious divorce.

The panel of state lawmakers released its report Friday after spending more than six hours in a closed-door session reviewing the findings. At the heart of the investigation was the question of whether Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, had pressured Monegan to fire Trooper Mike Wooten.

Palin has said Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

Investigator Stephen Branchflower, who drafted the bipartisan panel's report, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.

"Today's report showed that the governor acted within her proper and lawful authority in the reassignment of Walt Monegan," Meg Stapleton, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign, said in a written statement.

Stapleton added that the panel's report shows that the inquiry was partisan and that Palin and her husband, Todd Palin, were "completely justified in their concern regarding Trooper Wooten, given his violent and rogue behavior."

Monegan, meanwhile, said he felt "vindicated."

"It sounds like they've validated my belief and opinions," he said. "And that tells me I'm not totally out in left field."

The nearly 300-page report does not recommend sanctions or a criminal investigation.

The investigation revealed that Todd Palin has extraordinary access to the governor's office and her closest advisers. He used that access to try to get trooper Wooten fired, the report found.

Branchflower said Sarah Palin violated a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.

Palin and John McCain's supporters had hoped the inquiry's finding would be delayed until after the presidential election, in which they face an uphill battle against Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But the panel of lawmakers voted to release the report, although not without dissension.

"I think there are some problems in this report," said Republican state Sen. Gary Stevens, a member of the panel. "I would encourage people to be very cautious, to look at this with a jaundiced eye."

So she was found to "have abused her power" and it was found that "a family grudge" was part of the basis for her decision. I guess if the American people are OK with the Beverly Hillbillys moving to Washington Palin should be fine. Hell, Bush got elected twice because he is the "kinda guy you would want to have a drink with." Didn't seem to matter to anyone that he never passed Econ 101...based on the economic mess he created you have to wonder if he even attended. Laughing

Maybe after losing their jobs, homes and retirement some Americans have become wiser. We will see. Rolling Eyes

Why no criminal investigation or actual sanctions, Join Me? Did the commission recommend or mandate Alaska's rehiring or in any other way compensating M. Wooten for improper or wrongful termination? Why or why not?

I think you are confusing issues. Why no criminal investigation or actual sanctions? Because they found that while she "abused her power" she did not break a law.

Why isn't this trooper being compensated or reinstated. Obviously, because he deserved to be fired. The fact of the matter is that finding of "abuse of power" comes from the fact that Palin "failed to keep her husband from meddling in the discipline of the state trooper." Being the Governor of a state does not mean you can let your husband settle personal grudges using your authority. Clearly an indication of her poor judgment skills. She could have handled this the right way and there would have been no problem....she didn't.

This makes no sense. If she "abused power," Alaska ought to sanction if not impeach her and pursue criminal charges. "Abuse of power" is no trivial matter. R. Nixon abused power, for example, and he had to go. If S. Palin "abused power," how can she remain in office as governor?

Good questions. And in the next few days people are going to be asking these same questions. What do you think the outcome will be? Will she have to bail out? The news of this report was just released a couple of hours ago. The party is just getting started. Laughing

Apparently you missed my exchange with Mises, above. But yes, unfortunately, the party is probably just getting started. Enjoy the bash.

Wouldn't it be better just to make fun of her. She isn't bright and is obviously unqualified to be president. Assuming a qualification for presidency is being able to string coherent sentences together.

Attacking her over something like this has much less possibility for humour. I was really enjoying Palin..she is just so very very dim.

Not to worry. If Palin knows how to put lipstick on a pitbull, she knows how to put perfume on one as well. She'll figure out a way to blame it all on liberals (and possibly Obama personally) and will come out smelling like a rose, at least as far as her supporters are concerned.

The report explains why she announced herself innocent of the charge yesterday. Doubtless Todd Palin is innocent of being a secessionist, too.

I am confident that no matter what happens, Sarah Palin shall always remain innocent of matters of foreign policy.
