Next week , I have an open class. I'm doing LESSON 13 -"THAT'S TOO BAD " periods 1 and 2. Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to spice it up a little .

Techer: "That's too bad."

Teacher: "Do you go to school on Saturdays?"

Students: "Yes."

Teacher: "That's too bad."

Teacher: "Do you have to go to a math hagwon after school."

Students: "Yes."

Teacher: "That's too bad."

Teacher: "Do you have to go to an English hagwon after school."

Students: "Yes."

Teacher: "That's too bad."

Teacher: "Is Japan not relinquising Dokdo?"

Students: "What?"

Teacher: "That's too bad."

Teacher: "Did you eater lunch or dinner?"

Students: "No."

Teacher: "That's too bad. Bye."

At my eikaiwa in Japan in the old editions of the textbooks there was a chapter on "that's too bad" and apologizing for things you'd done.

There was a section that said "How would you apologize for these accidents?" Pictures of things like a broken window, crashed car, etc.

One of them was a box full of puppies that had been run over by a truck, and there was a pool of blood.

I taught for GEOS too. The dead puppies hit by a truck picture was in the Sprint 7 book if I remember correctly. Somebody told me they changed it in the next version.

You mean they aren't designing it for you, complete with Korean language class chanting about objectives?

AS a very small part of your lesson you could do the following:

Teach both that�s too bad and that�s great, make a power point presentation with some different situations like, winning the lottery, breaking a leg, getting an A etc, students have to respond correctly.

Did you ever see that dumb skit where someone was telling a story, like: Hey I won the lottery. Oh that�s good. But I have to pay a lot of tax on what I won. Oh, that�s bad. But I get to keep most of it. OH, that�s good et etc?

Maybe you could do something like that with that�s too bad and that�s great...

I haven�t seen the dialogue for this lesson, but if it is decentish then you could have the kids make a skit changing the dialogue. I think they would come up with some pretty funny stuff for that�s too bad. Even my kids who don�t have good English crack me up with their skits.

Since it is an open class do what the koreans do. Go over everything with the class before hand. Teach them everything, make sure they all know it, even help them half write the dialogues if you want. THen make sure your coteacher tells them that they have to pretend it is the first time. Bribe them with the promise of a class party if all goes well.

Also make sure your classroom is CLEAN. They really seem to pick about things like chalk residue on the board etc.
