I found out from other teachers that GEPIK teachers will be meeting in Suwon next week. Is this mandatory, and why are they meeting? Is it just for new teachers to meet and not feel "alone", or will there be training sessions making it more involved?

Don't know about a retreat next week but there is another "orientation session" happening in Yongin. Details are on the GEPIK website or you can look for the related thread in this forum.

The only thing I see are weird spreadsheet files with info on meeting in Bundang. I wonder who thought up that idea Very Happy

Maybe teachers in this area are supposed to meet in Suwon and take a bus together to Yongin. If I have to go, the school will have to figure it out.

More here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=125162&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=135

about page 9 or so in the thread.

Meet in Bundang for the bus ride out to the site.

Oh, and did you check to see if your name was even on the list of attendees?

That only lists middle and high school teachers. I am at an elementary school, and I don't even teach in the normal classrooms at the school. They have an English village / center built. The textbooks used don't reflect the textbooks the head English teacher (Korean) is required to use. The school just told my co-teacher and me to buy books for our classes.

If this is the norm though and there is a mandatory orientation for elementary school teachers, it would be nice to know this week so we can plan our lessons.

If GEPIK doesn't invite you, then don't worry about going. Unless your "co-teacher" doesn't tell you about these events.
