Firstly, I apologise if this is not the correct part of the forum to post this...I think it is a general question.

I want to send English materials to some friends that I made on my recent travels. They are unable to afford any tuition and have no internet access but do have access to a cassette walkman and writing materials.

I was thinking that some kind of independent study program with a coursebook and audio (which I could record to cassette) would be perfect. As I said they will be studying by themselves with no teacher or tutor so it needs to be a DIY type deal.

They are young adults / adults and can speak very basic, broken English. I guess they would be classed as beginner / low intermediate students. They mainly want to learn English in order to become local guides and communicate with tourists so it would be good if the content was somewhat practical. It would also be good if the course had more books at higher levels so that I could send them new materials as they progress.

So, yeah...does anyone have any recommendations? Know of a good book / audio course?

Cheers.

I know Pimsleur is a popular audio language series, though I could never get into audio lessons. I do better with books.

Actually now that I think of it, I'm not sure if they have one to learn English. Maybe they're only for people with English as the first language.

I just checked out their website and it seems that the courses are only for speakers of certain languages, unfortunately not an appropriate one. Thanks for the idea anyway.

Vocabulary in Use are great books for studying english independently. The have multiple levels too. Some come with CD's. I have the intermediate book and have found it very helpful when trying to think of lessons and activities.
